5.0 out of 5 stars How to fix cartridge problem
Loved this LeapPad, but after a while, it only worked with the original book. Doesn't work with any cartridge!!! Then I called LeapPad, they told me it's because the cartridge is dirty. What to do is to wipe cartridge with rubbing alcohol, then while the cartridge is still wet, push it in/out to the leapPad, so this will clean the leapPad's cartridge receiver also. This...

My 3 year old daughter has had a My First Leap Pad since she was 2. She loved it since the get go. The easy to use books, attached "pen" allowed her to use it and actually learn and an early age for the material that was included.

My husband and I bought this for our 2-1/2 year old for Christmas. She really loves it. She is definately at an age where she enjoys learning and is very interested in colors and shapes and showing us "what she can do". This is perfect. We often travel out of town and this is great for those long road trips. Anything to keep her content. I think it will be helpful as she learns to write and read, and it is wonderful for learning shapes and colors. I would say the downfall in this toy is that the cord for the pen is a little short (suppose that is a safety issue) and also I dont like how the cartridge sticks out of the side. I think a drop in sort of thing would have been better. The books are a little tough to get in place, but she is learning. I think she is a little young still, but will get lots of use out of it, and I think it is a good time to introduce this product to her at least. We are going to buy one for her cousin this month, so I think that shows how much we like it!!

We purchased this toy for our daughter last Christmas after she discovered her older brother's Leap Pad and enjoyed the idea of it, but spent too much time ripping out the pages of the books! I respect other reviewers who find little value in a "Jr." version of a toy, but I truly believe that the My First Leap Pad has features (board book binding, thicker pages, more basic themes) that make it an appropriate bridge toy. The list and range of titles is constantly expanding which is a boon to relatives who are constantly struggling to find gifts, but my two and a half year old still finds amusement in returning to her older books. I will admit that we have run through one of the pen units, but I have to concur with another reviewer that the Leap Pad customer service center is one of the better ones with whom I have dealt. We received a new pen in under a week. After a year, we still find that she drags this into bed with her after lights out and she falls asleep with it next to her. There are so many ways to spend lots of money on bad and useless toys, it is a pleasure to spend money on such a good one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Satisfied Mom, October 11, 2004
This review is from: LeapFrog My First LeapPad Learning System - Pink (Toy)
My grandmother got this for my daughter last Chanuka. My daughter was 2 years old at the time. Well, my daughter, now 3 years old, still absolutely loves it. She loves the electronic pen and all the sounds the computer makes when she touches a picture. About 98% of the pictures on each page makes some sort of sound. Even the tires make sounds when you put the pen to them. My daughter is really understanding the concept of reading too. She actually sounds out the words with the computer. She also likes to be able to turn the volume up and down with the pen. This computer made such an impression on my 3 year old daughter that the words, "Oh cool!" constantly come out of her mouth when she accomplishes one of the activities. Hearing those words come out of my baby's mouth is so adorable! I would recommend this product to anyone at anytime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun educational toy, November 21, 2004

My Mom bought a pink My First Leap Pad for my daughter's 3rd birthday. While my daughter was first learning to use it she didn't understand the need to touch the "go" circle on each and every page and she would quickly get upset and give up. It took a short time but she did get the hang of it and now at 3 1/2 she really enjoys her First Leap Pad and can run it like a pro. We have 4 books so far and they have kept her interested and entertained for hours at a time.

I do agree that the cartridges should have been done differently. They stick out too far, remove too easily and they are small and very easy to misplace, if you lose the cartridge then the book is useless. Also with small kids who like to chew on most everything, the cartridges appear to be fair game.

Speaking of chewing, for some reason my daughter recently decided to mangle the cord that the pen is attached to and it stopped working, of course. I thought I would have to buy a whole new First Leap Pad but just as I was about to do that, I managed to find a replacement pen at a local store and the problem was easily fixed. I was amazed that anyone had even "thought" of making the pens replaceable, but I was very glad that they did! For some reason the replacement pen has an even shorter cord than the original, but she doesn't seem to notice. She's just happy that her First Leap Pad works again!

I would suggest this toy for ages 3 and up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Give your kids a toy that is fun AND educational, December 8, 2003

The thing about the Leap Pad products is that they are fun and educational. The possibilities are pretty much endless, as parents can buy new books every now and then. The concept is neat, specially if your kids lust after your laptop. My daughter was always very interested in looking and playing with my laptop, which always worried me. Now she's got her very own "laptop" that she can take with her anywhere she goes and I don't have to worry about what her curious fingers are doing with it.

Also, the educational value of this toy is higher than just about any other toy available for kids of any age.

My 3 year old daughter has had a My First Leap Pad since she was 2. She loved it since the get go. The easy to use books, attached "pen" allowed her to use it and actually learn and an early age for the material that was included.

However, I noticed just a few months after receving it the electronics would short out on her. I thought, maybe the batteries needed to be changed. Ok, so I changed them, no help. Well, she was 2 when she got it she may have beat it up a little more than older children. Ok, we will get her a new one, this was a little over 6 months after she received the 1st one. Right off the new one seemed much better. I watcher my daughter like a hawk with how she treated her new one. And she was a champ at taking care of it. Then I noticed this new one is doing the same thing the old one did. My daughter got frustrated that it would short out or not even recognize the correct cartridge that was in the unit. Quite upsetting to see your daughter so upset at her abosultley favorite toy. So now I am stuck trying to deal with Toys'R'Us ( we purchased the warranty this time) with getting it replaced as well as Leap Frog. Seriously think about the money you really want to spend when purcasing this type of unit. Especially now with all the others to choose from. Such a shame...

5.0 out of 5 stars My 3 year old loves this toy!, February 7, 2005
This review is from: LeapFrog My First LeapPad Learning System - Pink (Toy)
I thought this looked like a nice learning toy on the leapfrog website. I was not disappointed and neither was my daugther.

Pros:

1. It's pink first off and she loves that.

2. It's easy to use and carry.

3. All her fav characters are available, wiggles, spongebob,

dora, the disney princesses and especially Tag.

4. The price is very reasonable.

5. Great for car travel, when winding down for bed or any time.

6. Volume adjusts.

Cons:

1. It would be a bit nicer if it was easier for her to snap the pages in a lone but at 3 they should have some parental involvement.

It only took my 3 year old a little while to understand the pressing "go" once you go to a new page - and the use of the pen pressing on the items or the bottom of the page.

We are doing home preschool, we do a mix of a lot of things and this "toy" really comes in handy - she chooses if she wants to do this or arts and crafts - worksheets, etc..

I would highly recommend this to anyone.

3.0 out of 5 stars Helping my baby sister, October 18, 2003
A Kid's Review

I enjoy sitting on the living room rug and helping my sister (20 months old) play with this. She is WAY TOO young to do this by herself -- after all, it DOES say for children ages 3 and older -- but with my help she is learning!

I was saddened to read the review below that said electronic toys are not good for kids. My sister gets PLENTY of playtime from me, my Mom and Dad and other sister. But we have all noticed that there are times she doesn't want 'human contact' --and that's where the Leap Pad comes in handy. And the giggles we get when she makes the toy 'talk' are worth it every time!!

I believe that most things are okay for children -- IN MODERATION! It's the same principle as using a TV as a babysitter. That's not right, but what is so awful about her watching 15 minutes of a Winnie the Pooh cartoon? She enjoys it and then walks away when it's over.

My daughter received this toy for her 1st Birthday. At first she was really frustrated at it because she didn't know quite how to work it (example: pressing the greeen go sign at the turn of each page to get the desired effects). Regardless, she kept up with it until she figured it out. She is now 20 months and it's her absolute favorite toy. She plays with this countless times troughout the day. We absolutely love it!! When ever she wants to change the storybook and the cartridge she just tells me or her older 3 yr. old brother to do it.

It's a great buy! Don't wait until she's 3 to buy it. Buy it now!
