LeapReader is the complete learn-to-read-and-write system that helps your child learn to read and write by sounding out words and guiding letter strokes interactively.** LeapReader engages kids in imaginative stories with lively character voices while building vocabulary and reading comprehension skills.

The Learning Difference
Children learn to read and write better when they learn to read and write together. LeapReader is the complete learn-to-read-and-write solution that combines three essential literacy skills: reading, writing and listening. By practicing them together, children can grow the skills they need help them become confident, independent readers.

Learn to Read
Build important early reading fundamentals like phonics, vocabulary and reading comprehension. Bring stories to life with lively character voices and fun sound effects as LeapReader sounds words out letter by letter.** The LeapReader library offers a wide range of interactive books, flash cards and more that make learning to read exciting. Titles include Disney-Pixar's Monsters University book in 3D, which takes children into Mike and Sulley's monster world to help them build comprehension and vocabulary skills; LeapFrog's Leap and the Lost Dinosaur book lets kids practice reading skills while they explore science and archaeology; to LeapFrog's Get Ready for Kindergarten multi-subject interactive book designed to introduce more than 40 kindergarten readiness skills with engaging art and fun audio effects.

Learn to Write
Interactive handwriting guidance helps children learn to write stroke-by-stroke, as their writing magically appears on special LeapFrog Learning Paper.** Practice writing letters and numbers, words and equations, and solve math problems and puzzles. New interactive writing workbooks in the LeapReader library such as Learn to Write Letters with Mr. Pencil integrate reading and writing in a fun, seamless experience. As children build phonics skills, they can also learn to write letters and numbers using the correct sequence of strokes, while they receive interactive guidance and positive reinforcement. These new workbooks feature revolutionary LeapFrog Learning Paper which contains ink embedded within the page for a mess-free writing solution.

Learn through Listening
LeapReader helps develop listening comprehension and vocabulary skills on-the-go with a growing library of 100+ audio books and more featuring classic and popular children's books that encourage a love of reading. Would definitely recommend this product as a great learning tool.
Mildred M. Banks
While there is a learning curve I think she's going to really get a lot of use out of it and it will be a good supplement for what she is learning in Pre K.
Tina
Learn to Read: The LeapReader functions largely like the Tag Reader when using books from that collection.

This product is missing one thing...the ability to hold ALL of the content. I wish you could download to a USB drive or something and plug into the pen, the book you want to read. Having said that, the old one only held 10 or 12 books. That made it a product that we liked, but didn't love. This one says that it holds up to 40 titles. As it is now, it holds all the compatible titles that we currently have. Not all are compatible however, and some that will be, are not yet.

The other downside with this product is that when you want to download another title, you have to re-download it every time. It doesn't save them like it used to. That may not make sense to the new users, and isn't a huge issue due to the larger storage capability, but still mildly annoying.

With all of the negatives out of the way, I still would recommend this product. The battery life is long. We will go several months before it needs to be changed. It allows a child who loves books to spend time exploring themselves. They also offer way more content than they used to. I am glad to see they brought out a new one. I thought this product was dead when they brought out their last Christmas offerings, and it made me disappointed. Glad to see I was wrong.

One small thing I would say as well, for parents who are buying this as a Christmas gift. Open the package and get the books downloaded and ready to go before you wrap it up. It does take some time and considerable effort to get it up and running. It is not a add batteries and go type of item.

We are long time users of the Tag pen system. We were pretty excited to read about this new and improved version several months ago when it was announced. We pre-ordered it so we could be some of the first to use it. We got one for each of our children - two total. We did not order from Amazon - though that would have been our preference. Amazon just didn't have the purple one in stock when we ordered. If you are excited for this improved device, it would be wise to temper your excitement. Though this is an improvement, it's not a direct upgrade.

Many of the Tag books that are supposed to be compatible have not been readied for the device quite yet. I'm surprised LeapFrog put this device out without baking their content fully. It seems content would take less time and effort than the hardware, but that's just a guess. Also, contrary to many of the early reviews I've seen, NOT ALL TAG BOOKS WILL BE COMPATIBLE. LeapFrog has a list of compatible titles on their website. LeapFrog did say in their press release that LeapReader "is backwards compatible with MOST of the Tag library." I just think it's strange that they didn't make all of the books compatible. Their support told me that if they don't make the book anymore, it won't be updated. I'm not sure why this is as it can't possibly take much effort to port the old files. I mean, at least make them an audiobook. I suppose it's licensing issues. You know who doesn't care about licensing issues? My 5 year old and 3 year old. They just know that Spider-Man won't work on their new pens. Their other favorite is "T-Rex's Mighty Roar." Fortunately, that one IS available as an audiobook, albeit not an interactive one.

The biggest nightmare of this device is the LeapFrog Connect software you have to use.

If you are not familiar with the Leap Reader or Tag reading system, then you need to know that in addition to purchasing a Leap book you need to download (using Leap Connect Software) the audio for each book as well. This issue is that Leap unapologetically sells books for which they do not yet have the audio available for download. So you end up spending a lot of money on a book that doesn't work with the Reader/Tag for which it is marketed. Nor is Leap able to provide a date when such a download will be available. Customer Support at Leap seems to think there is nothing wrong with this business model. If you already have a Leap Reader or Tag Reading system, I would highly recommend that you check (via Leap Connect) whether the title is available for download prior to purchasing a particular book.

If you are looking for a specific titles audio that is not yet available, this would indicate the book was released before we had intended. If this is the case the audio for that title will be available soon.

You can also check our compatibility list available through LeapFrog.com to check that your book works with your device. Most Tag titles are available for the LeapReader device.

We appreciate you taking the time to provide us with your feedback, we look to ensure a better experience for you in the future.

Thanks!

My wife and I are both English teachers, and we are both huge fans of integrating technology to build interest in "analog" reading. The Leap Pad was never really an option for us because both of our kids--like most, I'd assume--live a life absolutely inundated with screens of all sizes. Having used the original Tag Reader for years, I must preface my criticisms of this new product by applauding Leap Frog's efforts to literally re-invent a child's pre-reading relationship with books, while maintaining the integrity of the skill, i.e., flipping pages, tracking, etc.

That said, this new updated product is an absolute disappointment for this previously loyal proponent. The addition of music and other new functions is, in my opinion, a gimmicky distraction from what was previously a pure reading tool. In my child's daily sea of electronic distractions, all of the new shiny buttons merely take away from what was otherwise an uninterrupted, self-guided task. Even though I didn't load any extra music or games, during reading his fingers will fumble one of the huge, glowing buttons and the pen interrupts, "GAMES! Tell your parent to go online and download your games. Also, if he says no, just ask for his phone because reading is boring!" Okay, I added that last part. I have, however, had the discussion with my five-year-old that the pen is not the boss of me.

The most glaring over-sight in this new update, however, is the fact that every one of my son's favorite books for his old Tag Reader are now out-dated. Seriously. Every single book that he used to use, T-Rex, Roar!, Spider-man, and Ben 10, are no longer supported by the new pen. Perhaps naively, I assumed that any product worth its salt would maintain compatibility with its existing product line.
