More like a DVD than an interactive game,

This review is from: LeapFrog Leapster Learning Game Backyardigans (Toy)
What a disappointment! My 4 yr. old daughter absolutely LOVES the Backyardigans so I thought this would be a perfect to sneak in some learning. It is more like a DVD than a video game in that there is a lot of animated "filler" as kids navigate from activity to activity. The only skills that are practiced are counting (in a Frogger like activity), patterning (in a Simon like activity), and observing (in an I-Spy like activity). The games themselves offer 2 levels: easy and super easy. Once kids have played each one, there is a "bonus" dance party at the end where kids can choose a character to move to the music. My daughter quickly learned that the dance party music never changed and each character followed the same pattern of steps over and over.
All in all, my daughter liked the game because she could interact (albeit minimally) with the characters. It did hold her attention for a couple hours during a long car trip. However, it does not deliver the same level of content and challenge as other Leapster cartridges. For my purposes, I would have been better off buying a Backyardigans DVD and saving about $10 to use on gas! :(

My 3 year old loves the Backyardigans. This "game" is really a show/DVD. I want her to learn, which she has with the Dora game and the basic functions of the L-max. I wouldn't spend the money on this game if I had it to do over again. NOT worth it. It is cute, but NOT educational.

My children got Leapster 2 game systems for Christmas. I purchased this game because the reviews stated it was simple. This is a great game for the 4 and under crowd. While the game is rated PreK - 2nd, I would stick to the PreK crowd with this game. There is just enough activity for learning to take place, but enough "down time" that something else can keep the interest of the child. My children are very young (2 and 4). This game is actually a little too easy for my 4 year old, but just right for my 2 year olds'. If provides just enough challenge for them to learn. The "find it" game is something they will have to grow in to, and probably appropriate for my 4 year old. However, the help options provides just enough help for my 2 year olds to be able to play and have fun.
I would probably not recommend this game for a child beyond the age of five. However, if you are like me and ignore the "recommended" ages for toys and allow younger children to play with supervision - this is an excellent first game. Age three would probably be the perfect fit, but a 2 year old can grow into the game and a four year old can master it quickly enough to gain confidence using the Leapster controls and following the directions so they can progress into more challenging games.

My son loves the Backyardigans, and so, he loves this game!! I personally don't think its all that educational and probably wouldn't have bought it if I had tried it out first..

Just bought the Leapster 2 and Backyardigans for my soon-to-be 4-year-old. It did not hold her interest at all. It makes very little use of the stylus, which she loves to use.
Most of the games on the cartridge involve the directional pad, which is more difficult for her to use consistently because it is very stiff. The games were quite boring (like hunting for items) and unlike other Leapster games, provided no assistance when she made repeated mistakes, leading to frustration. Also, the game has a lot of extended songs and cutscenes, and the sound is terrible. I agree with the other reviews that the game has a lot of fluff and little substance.

My 5yr old was excited about receiving this, but immediately she started off on Level 2 and basically after a couple of days was done with it! a bit too 'slow' for her pace. Definitley recommend for 4yr olds!

Bought this for my 3 yr old and he isn't really interested it it at all. As a matter of fact, he gets bored with it pretty easily.
I think it may be a function of the Leapster in general (which I'm not that thrilled with), but this game doesn't help. Just can't hold his interest (and I don't really blame him). Save your money.

Does anyone know if this game is compatible with the Leapster Explorer? I bought this for my daughter, but don't want to open it and not be able to return it. Any guidance would be appreciated! Thanks!

Our son loves the Backyardigans, we have watched the shows with him and they are very creative and inspire imagination.
The game for Leapster 2 goes off some of the shows and he is learning number patterns and sequences. Great purchase. No problem at all with the vendor we purchased from.
