My neighbor originally bought these for her son, who is 6. They were too beginner for him, so she handed them to us. My son loves them. They are very beginning words, The cat pulled a bat from the hat. The games are really neat in the back too. My son enjoys listening to the clues and finding the answers. He really has yet to pay attention to the words, but he's 3. We have time!

I love the Tag system, and I think it is a great learning tool for our Kindergarten homeschool curriculum. My daughter is a bit of a grumpy reader unless you get her on a great day, so it is important for me to have a variety of items like workbooks, books, DVDs, games, etc. for her to propel through reading. She likes the TAG system, and it is a great tool, but until she gets through the frustration of learning to read using phonics and sounding out words, this will be a challenge. She wants to rush, but this system is not meant for that. It is a terrific tool, but your child will not read overnight and may not "love it" for what it is - it's not playing with Matchbox cars or a Leapster, it is reading, so be patient and use in only small doses until your child's reading really takes off.

If you take this set at face value, it is a great way to get 6 tag books for a great value. These are different from regular Tag books in that they are shorter, words are bigger (and can be set to read word-by-word, or sound at a time), and they do have a smaller activity section in the back for a "game".

As far as teaching to read, I personally don't like that the focus is on vowels, rather than consonants, first. My almost 4 year old can't focus on learning the middle sounds yet, and the book assumes that consonants are already learned. So, for now, we just use them as books, and hopefully as he gets older, he'll be interested in breaking down the words sound-by-sound.

So, overall, if you expect to get a top-notch reading program, you'll be disappointed. BUT...if you expect to get some great little books to add to your Tag library that might AID in mastering basic reading concepts, then you'll be pleased. The Leapfrog site often has all three phonics sets for less than the cost of two at regular retail (just a heads-up!).

I am a special education teacher and my students love the tag reader. For students who have trouble reading it helps them tremendously. It also helps with comprehension skills.

Our kids love the books in this set! We're amazed at how the pen reads the book. We call it the magic pen. It really is pretty amazing. Our oldest loves pressing the pen to the words, story elements, and the games. Our youngest likes pressing the pen to the pictures and hearing what they have to say. It really is a fantastic idea and great for learning. Our oldest is already starting to recognize the words. I'm glad we have the set because if we had just one book, that's all we'd hear!

My son is 5, and he's homeschooled. He loves these books. We use the tag reader with these as part of our homeschool curriculum for learning to read. He gets excited using his tag reader to read them, and then he comes and "reads" them to me. I am pretty sure he's just memorizing the words, still he is now starting to recognize some of the words when he sees them in other places. So, I feel that is progress.

Another great buy from LeapFrog at Amazon.com. It is a great educational tool and my grandson thinks it is a toy. I bought the book so it would make learing to read fun for him and it has.

My children love the LeapFrog Tag reading system. I am not the biggest fan. However, the LeapFrog phonics set is less of the "fun" stuff from other Leapfrog books (the sound effects, popular characters, etc.) and more actual reading practice. While this set of books is a decent resource for teaching young children to read, it isn't the best. First, the whole premise of the Tag system is a bit flawed. The kids learn to love the electronic ability of the Tag, not the book itself. They rely on the pen to bring the book to life, not their imaginations. So, it is a bit of a slippery slope with the Tag system. My children use the Tag for fun in their play time, but reading lessons do not include use of the Tag. The Phonics Books are a decent resource to have, and they do love the books. If you are trying to teach your child to read, this is probably not for you. If you are looking for something fun that will supplement their learning, this is a decent resource for you.

My 4 year old nice loves this and enjoys sitting by herself for a solid 30 minutes and playing with her tag reader. It really is teaching her the fundamentals of vowels which needs to be taught rather than "inherited" through oral expression.

I purchased this item for my Grand Daughter. She loves it! It has her enjoying learning and she picked up on how to use everything quickly. This is an amazing teaching tool. I recommend this product and this series of products.
