Each of the five storybooks is designed around a unique core curriculum covering the bases from patterns and rhyming to narrative and concept. Scout asks more than 70 questions prepared by early reading experts to encourage active engagement and to build important comprehension skills. The play-based curriculum is designed to delight and entertain, and is appropriate for children ages 2 to 5 years.
Research has demonstrated that the most effective read-aloud experiences are interactive. In other words, children learn best when they are actively involved in asking and answering questions, drawing inferences and making predictions. Read With Me Scout was specifically developed to bring this interactive experience to kids in a magical way to develop key comprehension skills. As your child reads along with Scout, 70+ spoken questions and audio-responses help build comprehension skills that will get your little one on the path to reading success. “From reading aloud to reading along, Read With Me Scout reflects best practices in early reading instruction that helps your child develop important language and comprehension skills critical for success in preschool and beyond.” -Clement C., LeapFrog Learning Expert
Innovative Learning Approach
Discoveries abound when Scout reads out loud! Read With Me Scout includes five different book genres that offer a range of ways to build early reading skills as your child is exposed to different storytelling concepts The Pattern Book includes rhymes, refrains and repetition to encourage children to predict what comes next; the Narrative Book takes children through a storyput together with characters, settings and a sequence of events; the Learn-About Book helps reveal our world through reading, and reinforces the concept that print carries meaning; in the Rhyming book, children learn about the sounds of language while building phonological awareness; and the Concept Book explores concepts like colors to label and classify new information.

The books are short and easy. What I liked best about Scout is that my three year old was able to pick up what to do pretty quickly. I did the book selection and head patting a couple times to show her, then she got the picture and was able to do it on her own. Very nice! I would say that is not always the case with similar toys, especially for younger children. (Mine just turned 3 in the past month.)
The "do it myself" factor was really nice. She's carried Scout and the books around quite a bit this week, showing everybody what a big kid she is now.
I don't think this is expandable like some other leapfrog products. I could be wrong, but I think you're limited to the dog and these five books. But at this price its probably still a good gift for a little one who will grow out of this soon enough and start asking you for an ipad or something.
It wasn't hard to get out of the package, but it was very securely fastened and taped to the box. It took a pair of scissors to get the books out of the package.
This Scout operates in two different modes: Story or Sleepy Time. The Story mode "reads" the included books to the child. It asks questions as it reads and prompts the kid to "pat" his head to turn the page. The 5 books are cute and they have been read many times already. They teach patterns, sequence of events, color labeling and classifying, rhymes and weather. There are multiple methods in each book, like rhymes, repetition and asking questions as it reads. The kid "pats" Scout on the back to answer.
Also in Story mode, Scout will respond to three different pressure points. One is the Musical Paw which plays songs. Another is the Friendly Paw (designated by a bone) which will say cute phrases. The last is Scout's Cheek which also says friendly phrases.
In story mode, the kid presses a button on Scout's collar which are coded to the books. It tells you which book you picked and makes sure you have it in front of you before it starts reading. (The information which came with the product say that if you don't have the book it will still read and ask questions based on what is heard, not seen. Didn't realize that!)
Sleepy Time mode does not require the books. The music paw plays lullabies, similar to the ones in the previous incarnation of Scout. It will turn off after 8 minutes, unless the child presses for another story and more songs.
This is a neat new addition to the LeapFrog line and I'm sure my kids will love it for a long time.
ALSO. When Scout asks a question, like "what makes you happy?" he doesn't give enough time to answer. My son always gets interrupted.
My son's now asking for Violet and Eli toys.. so I guess he really enjoys the puppy, and that's what matters.
Scout's got a lot of tech crammed into him, much more than your average squeezable, interactive plush toy. Set up is a snap (we had Scout unboxed with the help of a scissors in less than 3 minutes). You begin by pressing a color coded button on Scout's collar that corresponds to the cover the chosen book. He's got a pleasant (but somewhat on the loud side) voice that sings songs, giggles when hugged, asks your child questions that relate to the story being read (e.g.: "Do you feel happy or sad? When you feel grumpy, what helps you feel better?"), and of course reads one of five stories. You can pat Scout on the head to move along with the story or follow one of his other instructions (e.g.: "Pat my cheek to hear my elephant sound!").
The interactive portions are above average in their creativity compared to other similar products on the market. Nonetheless, you'll still get what you pay for. This isn't a supercomputer that has infinite variability and/or artificial intelligence. After one time through each book, the rapport starts to sound very repetitive. Kids pick up on this nearly as quickly as the adults who wish Scout was in another room. The replay value is therefore limited, which you'll soon discover after you've burned through the five short board books.
The first time we played with Scout, play time lasted just over 15 minutes before my 4-year-old moved on to the bubble wrap he came packed in. (Honestly, it held his attention almost as long.Read more ›
