4.0 out of 5 stars BETTER THAN EXPECTED
I bought this for my 3-year-old daughter the other day. It is better than I anticipated. Firstly, It says the denomination of money deposited. It then tells you either a famous president is on the coin or what combination adds up to the amount deposited i.e.: a quarter=$.25 or five nickels=a quarter.

Secondly, it sets small goals for young children to attain and keeps a running tally of the money deposited.

This bank is made for preschoolers to help them understand the concept of saving money and to help them learn the monetary denominations of the coins they put in.

My daughter was very proud of herself as she approached her first $5.00 goal. She could care less about the "mechanical gears" on the inside. What intrigues her most, as with most 3 & 4 year olds, is that she is learning how to save BY HERSELF!!

My son had saved some money in his old piggy bank and we were out to spend it. He saw this and really wanted it. I thought that it would be a fun way to save and he loves playing with it. However, there are some aspects of it that could be improved upon:

1. The display at the front with the wheels and chutes it a little misleading, I thought that a there would be a lot more movement when the coin was dropped in than there is.

2.The savings drawer is too small and easily removed so most of the time my son removes the money from it and leaves it on the floor.

In addition, I'm not sure how you would get the maximum amount that you can save on the savings counter into the savings drawer unless you were only saving quarters since it is not very big. Once it starts filling up, the money starts to back up into the display screen and you need to shake it to get it to fall into the savings drawer.

3. Once the money has been removed from the savings drawer, the machine doesn't automatically reset to zero so unless you manually do it, when you put the money in, it keeps counting from what was in there already. So if you had $5 in the savings drawer, removed it and then started re-inserting money it would register as $5 plus what you had just put in. It's hard to get across to my 3 year old that you need to zero it again for the balance on the display to be accurate.

4. It doesn't have a slot for dollar coins, can't imagine why not.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best bank ever, September 19, 2004
This review is from: LeapFrog Super Saver Teaching Bank (Toy)
I got this for my daughter for her 4th birthday. I use this bank and a reward system. My daughter has set a goal for somthing that she wants and when she make a good choice she gets to add to her bank and try to reach her goal. It has been wonderful. It has cut down the fit throwing by 90%. I love to do it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Birthday Fun, November 2, 2004

My son received the Super Saver Teaching Bank for his 3rd birthday. It was a party favorite as soon as he opened it. As stated in other reviews, the Super Saver recites facts and also playes a short rap song that had everyone grooving.

Everyone passed around the bank and deposited their coins into the slot. Before you know it, my son left his party with $22.00.

He can identify the different coins and is learning simple math. He enjoys saving and will not hesitate to ask his father as soon as he walks into the house if he has any money. When my husband gives him a coin he runs to the bank singing the song "For The Love Of Money" by the O'Jays.

5.0 out of 5 stars best present for my kindergartener, September 6, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: LeapFrog Super Saver Teaching Bank (Toy)
My daughter was promised a suprise. The thought of getting another toy bothered me - then I saw this bank. It is fantastic. She loves it. She plays with it - it is excellent at teaching her the coins - it tells her what it is when she inserts the coin -, then gives her a little fact about it. It also shows how she is doing against her saving goal. She brought it in to share with her class - and it was a hit with all the kids and her teacher. My only warning is that you will have no change left in your house : )

3.0 out of 5 stars Great toy...but one BIG problem...., February 23, 2005
This review is from: LeapFrog Super Saver Teaching Bank (Toy)
My 3 year old received this toy for his birthday. It seemed great at first. He quickly learned to identify the different coins by name, and was learning the concept of saving money. That is, until he learned to open the back of the bank (and that only took about 2 weeks). Once he learned that, he was constantly taking the money back out of the bank. Not only does that defeat the concept of saving money, but the bank then no longer "knows" how much money is in it! I really wish that when they had designed this toy they made the back harder to open. Make it a real combination lock instead of just looking like one....make it screw on....just make it more of a challenge to open, because once they get the back off, there will never be any money in it again!

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing, March 23, 2005
This review is from: LeapFrog Super Saver Teaching Bank (Toy)
As other reviewers have posted, this bank has a very small drawer to hold the money. I was disappointed with it for that, as well as a few other minor things. The "goal setting" option wasn't realistic for the size of the item, either. I'd like to see a few more features as far as money counting goes, too.

The little rhymes it uses to identify coins are cute, but they're not enough to overshadow the other flaws.

It's not worth $20.00+, IMO.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic teaching toy, July 16, 2005

This review is from: LeapFrog Super Saver Teaching Bank (Toy)
As a homeschooling mom, I found this product to be a fantastic teaching "toy." It does not have the space to save an enormous amount of coins, however my four year old son was able to fit twenty dollars worth! He has learned the coin names as well as the demoninations and whose portrait adorns the front. With each coin inserted, the child is subjected to a short lesson about the coin with a small amount of variation. I was thoroughly pleased with this bank upon purchase and have found nothing to be unsatisfactory. It is easy to use and helpful in encouraging my son to set a savings goal and to stick with it. Highly recommended!!!

My 4 year old wanted this for Christmas, and Santa delivered. He is thrilled with it, uses it all the time, and has been inspired to start saving his money for toys he wants. Of course, he now asks every family member "Do you have any change?" the minute he sees them, but that's okay...
He has learned the difference between the coins, and likes some of the jokes, sayings and songs.
My only real complaint is the drawer is way too small, and doesn't hold much money. If he has a lot of change, it's impossible to get the bank to tell him the total, because it stops counting once it's full, and just repeats "Your bank is full". The other day it was full at $10.79, but we still had $3 more in change to put in. I would like a larger drawer, but if that's not possible, I don't like the fact that we can't empty the drawer and continue counting where we left off. The machine insists you reset it to zero, but we aren't done counting all the change we have! It gets pretty frustrating. I had to empty the drawer with our $10.79, set that aside, then reset it to zero, and begin again with the remaining change. Once I was done with that, I had to add the two totals together for my son. How ridiculous is that? He has never been able to reach even the $15 "goal" before it is full and you have to reset it.
In general, I really like the bank, and my son loves it. I do agree with other people that it would be nice to see more movement in the front as the coin drops, but my son doesn't seem to mind or care.
I do appreciate the fact that it has inspired my son to save money, and he is now incredibly excited whenever he gets change. He runs right up to his room to add it into his bank.
If they'd just make the drawer bigger, I'd give it 5 stars.
