This review is from: LeapFrog Tag Reading System (Lavender) (32 MB) (Toy)
Santa brought the Tag system for my 3-year-old daughter last Christmas, and she loved it from the get-go. We got a bunch of the books, including all her favorites like Dora and the Disney Princesses. She spent hours and hours playing with the books, and I would switch the books around so she wouldn't get bored.
Then she realized that her Tag only held 5 books, and that she would have to choose which stories she would have access to. Five sounds like a good amount, but not when you're three and you've "read" them all. It's been a major source of frustration in our house for months. And now Leapfrog has blessed us with a Tag with more memory! My daughter will be thrilled to get more books this Christmas--and be able to read them all at once! YAY!

I am such a fan of Leap Frog, and this system does not disappoint. We've been using it for about three months now, and my kids absolutely love it. It makes each book come alive, and has helped to make learning to read fun. We started out just using this on car trips, but it soon became a daily favorite in our house.
Pros: It is so easy to use! My 2-year old can actually handle it quite well, especially after watching her older brother with his. It's easy to grip and navigate around the pages. Each page also has several modes - you can read specific words, an entire phrase, or press specific objects in the book for sound effects. The library of 30+ books that go with this system is also nice - we have six of the books so far, and after three months my kids are still actively participating in reading each one. The best part about this specific Tag is the increased memory, which is a big plus as your child accumulates more than five books. Cons: We've only run into one issue, and that has been with the placement of the on/off button. My 3-year old has smaller hands and to get a comfortable grip he tends to hold it towards the top of the pen. When he gets excited and starts really cruising around the page, his hand inadvertently hits the on/off switch. Other than that, we have absolutely loved this system and highly recommend it!

I gave this to my daughter for her 4th birthday. She absolutely loves it and plays with it all the time. I do not like having to sync each book but otherwise it is great. Would highly recommend it. Might be a pain in the neck for me but well worth it for the enjoyment and education she is getting out of it.

I know that these LeapFrog toys are sometimes geared for the older school-aged children, but DON'T WAIT on this one! And don't waste your money on a Tag Jr. if you have a toddler! My three year old got this for Christmas just two weeks after her birthday. She immediately figured out how to use it, how to read it, how to interact with it, how to be gentle with the books and pages, and how to play the games. She devours these books and activities and loves reading like a big girl! If I would have followed the guidelines on age from LeapFrog I would have had a bunch of useless Tag Jr. stuff sitting around and would have had to STILL go out and get he regular tag! If your child is already flipping through paper-paged books and not still chewing on thick cardboard then they are likely ready for the full Tag system!

I bought this toy for my daughters' birthdays - turning 2 and 4. They both love it!! Obviously, the 4 yr old can do more with it, but they both love it! It is totally worth the buy, including how expensive the books are. I think it will be great for a few years.

This is a decent "learn to read tool" - but takes way too much effort. You have to synch onliner every book you buy. This is definitely an ease of use flaw.
The battery case cover is cumbersome to unscrew. Would not purchase again, or give as a gift.

TAG reader is a great idea but it is incredibly flawed in a couple ways. First, it only holds 32 MB which if your kid wants more than 8 or so books, it can't hold them all. The worst is if you have more than one TAG system (for multiple kids or to another to hold more books) or the older version which only held 16 MB and you don't know which book is on which TAG. They need to make the system's storage large enough to hold at least 12 books and games.
But the worst thing about the TAG that I have found is that my son want to play with it, but really he just wants it to read him a story. He has NEVER on his own picked it up to "learn" reading and practice it making the letter sounds or reading each word. We sit down with him each time to WORK on reading and learning the words rather than just letting TAG read it for him. But if we're sitting down and working on it with him, why do we need TAG? At that point, I simply use the books and don't involve the TAG reader at all...so why did I spend $50? I certainly didn't think this was going to be a magic tool that would teach my child to read, but it IS marketed as an educational toy that "helps your child learn to read". I'm sure some kids that like reading and want to learn to read on their own use it to learn to read, but I would guess that's only maybe 30% of kids. Most kids I think probably sit down with it as a toy to let the TAG read them the story. So, fine for a toy, but bad for an educational system. I was debating between this and the VTECH system--don't know if that one is any better but worth looking into. I did have a problem with the first 32 MB TAG we bought, within a month, the reader wasn't working. I contacted Leapfrog and they sent me a new one right away, saying that sometimes the "eye" of the reader malfunctions or comes loose. After 1 month? That doesn't instill a lot of confidence! But they did replace the product and the 2nd one seems to be fine after a few months. So mixed reviews over all, but not good for teaching your child to read on their own.

The kids really enjoy using the Tag pen and will actually sit still for long periods of time. A must have for long trips when you are tired of showing movie after movie. My 4.5 year old uses it, and my 2.5 year old as well. First time I've ever seen the younger sit still.

The most difficult thing I have ever had to get to connect to a computer. Once you are done spending 30 minutes to get it to connect and add the books to it, it is great. Our 5 year old daughter loves it, I just wish it had more memory to add more books so I don't have to fight with it each time to get it to connect to the computer to add/remove books.

I bought this instead of the Tag Jr for my 2 year's birthday. She LOVES it and plays with it daily. She plays with it more than any other toy she has. Her 7 year old sister also enjoys playing with it.
