Product Description

Teacher Review

This LeapPad Pro chapter book, based on L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel, is designed to challenge more advanced readers. Children familiar with the 1939 movie version of Baum's novel will immediately recognize Dorothy and her plight in Oz. But they may be surprised by some of Baum's other characters, such as the tiger-faced Kahlidas and the armless Hammer-Heads. Because the book is designed for confident readers, it does not offer children the option of having the entire story read to them. Instead, they are expected to read it themselves. If they get to a difficult word, they can tap it with the pen to hear it pronounced (or, if it's a boldface word, tap it twice to hear its definition as well). They can also sweep the pen across the line to hear entire sentences. Audio chapter summaries help kids remember what they've read, and questions at the end of each chapter enhance their comprehension and critical thinking skills. This book also works with the LeapPad. --Elisabeth Fredrickson, mother of three and former English teacher

My seven year old daughter, who is just beginning to read books on her own loves the leap pad because she can control the pace of the story. The Wizard of Oz is the first book she tried, but she has also enjoyed the science and music ones as well.

I purchased the Leap Pad Pro for my first grade daughter. It came with the Oz book, which is comprised of 60-odd pages of primarily text (as opposed to pictures)and constitutes the first (nearly) text-only book she has been willing to read up to now. She has thoroughly enjoyed the product, which is both challenging and stimulating. The minor downsides: a)some attention needs to be paid to not losing the cartridge b) I think it unlikely that the Oz book will be reread c)several of the Leap 3 level books appear to be out of stock .... Overall, I am delighted with the product, though it is somewhat pricey for a single book (Oz) and the availability of other books appears to be somewhat limited.
