Teacher Review
This LeapPad Pro chapter book, based on L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel, is designed to challenge more advanced readers. Children familiar with the 1939 movie version of Baum's novel will immediately recognize Dorothy and her plight in Oz. But they may be surprised by some of Baum's other characters, such as the tiger-faced Kahlidas and the armless Hammer-Heads. Because the book is designed for confident readers, it does not offer children the option of having the entire story read to them. Instead, they are expected to read it themselves. If they get to a difficult word, they can tap it with the pen to hear it pronounced (or, if it's a boldface word, tap it twice to hear its definition as well). They can also sweep the pen across the line to hear entire sentences. Audio chapter summaries help kids remember what they've read, and questions at the end of each chapter enhance their comprehension and critical thinking skills. This book also works with the LeapPad.
