5.0 out of 5 stars Must Buy
This book is a must buy if you own the LeapPad - the Nutcracker page alone is worth the cost of the book & the leappad!!! I have 3 daughters - ages 2, 4, and 6 and out of all the LeapPad books I have bought them --- they all spend more time on this one page then any other book. It has a wonderful game where the book plays part of the music from the ballet and you...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as Fun as others
I got this book for my son with his Quantum Pad at Christmas. He got several others and likes most of them. The music one, however is his least favorite. I had been told that this was one of the best, so was surprised and looked at it myself. The problem is that many of the 'game' segments are quite similar and my son got tired of doing the same thing over and over...

This book is a must buy if you own the LeapPad - the Nutcracker page alone is worth the cost of the book & the leappad!!! I have 3 daughters - ages 2, 4, and 6 and out of all the LeapPad books I have bought them --- they all spend more time on this one page then any other book. It has a wonderful game where the book plays part of the music from the ballet and you have to decide which dancer the music was written for --- even my 2 year old will sit and play this one game over and over. I never would have believed a 2 year old would know that this music belonged to the Chinese dancers, or the SugarPlum Princess, or etc. but she is really getting good at it. Other cool pages include info on other composers and on many different instruments --- this book is a must buy!

This is a great interactive, interesting and fun book for the leap pad. My five year old son loves it, and even uses it on long car trips. It's something he can do by himself, it's also fun to share with adults. He has learned to identify all kinds of classical music, to my amazement. I find this book much better than some of the other leap pad reading books, because there's so much too it. Highly recommend!

Based on the reviews here I decided to buy this for my 3 year old and see what he thought. Although designed for older kids, he LOVES this book. He's able to recognize intruments in contemporary music and really enjoys the different music styles he's exploring in this book. He tells me if a song he selects is scary or funny or silly. This book is allowing him to appreciate the many forms of music and I see its impact when we listen to music on the stereo or radio. A great buy!

Of all the Leap Pad books, this one held my son's interest the most. It manages to teach children a remarkable amount about classical music and composers while holding the child's interest. My son spent hours playing with this in kindergarten and very quickly learned to identify all types of instruments, music and composers. His first grade music teacher recently reported to me with amazement that my son knew about the composer Saint-Saens, knew about his work "Carnival of the Animals", and even recalled that Saint-Saens had learned to read at the age of 3! My son knew all this from his Leap Pad! Best of all, he just loves playing with it and still goes back to it periodically. I wish the company would produce another one like it on other types of music, as this one is just so fantastic.

My two children, 8 and 6 love this! They have learned so much, and play with it over and over and over. I highly recommend this - and hope that Leap Pad will come out with another music book - perhaps featuring Jazz this time.

Right now my 2 kids are squished together on the sofa playing with this book... laughing! I try to introduce my children to classical music by playing it in the background while were home, but this makes it FUN! They're introduced to several composers, and they're kept interresting with funny facts about every one. Also this illustrates different components and styles of classical music. Educational & fun! What can be better?

5.0 out of 5 stars creative use of this technology, November 14, 2004

I agree with all who say this is the best Leap Pad book. My kids spend more time with it than with all the rest combined (and we have about half a dozen different books). This book is truly fun, and truly teaches children about music -- not just facts about composers, but also about parts of the orchestra, different styles and periods of classical music, and how music conveys ideas and feelings. I'd like to see the Leap Pad manufacturers apply the creativity of "Hit It Maestro" to the visual arts, sciences, history, etc.

My five year old LOVES it! He goes around humming classical music! It's so funny! And he recognizes pieces from Mozart, Vivaldi, Bach, Handel, etc! This is a "must-have" for the Leap Pad library. My husband and I enjoy it, too. Have fun!

My daughter received 4 Leap Pad books for Christmas. The others have barely been touched because she just LOVES this one. How many 5 year olds love opera? This book has sparked a true interest in classical music and opera for her. I would highly recommend it.

I was surprised just how much info LeapFrog was able to pack into "Hit it, Maestro!" My 4 year-old girl, and almost 3 year-old boy both find this book loads of fun. This book contains a very simple introduction to "classical composers and their greatest hits." "Hits" like: The Nutcracker, A Little Night Music, Beethoven's Fifth, Handel's Messiah, Vivaldi's Four Seasons, and more. Children are also introducted in an EXTREMELY basic way to a variety of musical terms (classical and otherwise), such as tempo, harmony, rhythm, counterpoint, melody, theme, and fugue. This book lets children listen to the sounds that different classical instruments make, and then "play" the instruments and "compose" their own music. There is also a page that gives an example of what soprano, alto, tenor, and bass voices sound like. My daughter is very interested in the composers and other information, and even requests that I read the book to her at bedtime (out of the LeapFrog).

Bar none, my kids like the opera and The Nutcracker pages the best. As a matter of fact, I don't know how many more times I will be able to listen to excerpts from The Nutcracker, The Magic Flute, or The Pirates of Penzance. This LeapPad's a winner, don't miss it!
