5.0 out of 5 stars Atlantic Salmon Rivers Around The World, July 31, 2006
By
flowDog "CHL" (Northern California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Leaper: The Wonderful World of Atlantic Salmon Fishing (Hardcover)
I have not ever fished for Atlantics, but I plan to do so this August. My mother completely surprised me with "LEAPER", and I immediately settled into looking at the pictures of the world's great Atlantic Salmon Rivers. While turning the pages, I couldn't help but notice the numerous color plates that display detailed views of various salmon flies associated with a region or country. I was completely fascinated by the many fly designs, the descriptions and pictures of the waters. The clarity of the pictures and the plates were excellent. But, what came through most of all was a MOOD much different from that of the trout fishing rivers and gear that I am so at home with. When the Atlantic Salmon gear was talked about, it was BIGGER, HEAVIER, and BOLDER that the gear with which I am accustomed to chasing trout for the last 36 years. The descriptions of large Salmon "takes" and the initial run when hooked, instilled a respect in me that will carry through until I get to the Gaspe Penninsula next month. The pictures of the Bogdans and Hardys reels impressed me with their workmanship, historical sigificance, and instilled in me that quality gear is essential for reliability, simply because the size of the quarry and the rivers WILL (if I am so fortunate) demand more of a reel and rod than I had ever previously used. This new found respect transformed into a shopping spree for suitable gear. I looked at both traditional and modern reels and rods. Indirectly, this book gave me a starting point in which to compare proper gear on the market today. I even located some Bogdans and Hardy Salmon Reels. After doing a ton of research, I ended up buying modern gear because I opted for a lighter and waterproof drag reel, paired with a relatively light rod. But "Leapers" put me in the ball game initially, and let me preview the sport of fishing for Atlantics, and began to prepare me, mentally and physically, for the seriously demanding, yet fun world of the Atlantic Salmon. If you are going to fish, or already have fished for Atlantics, this book will probably describe the river - it's history, famous pools and runs, flies, fisherman and gear. Written by well-respected fishing authors. Not a technical book, but more a relaxed submersion in the rivers I have only dreamed of. A wonderful introduction and planning guide for what may become a very addictive pursuit.
