More About the Author

Ellen has sold more than 200 designs, and been published numerous times in many crochet magazines including Interweave Crochet, Crochet Today, Crochet!, Crochet World and Inside Crochet. Ellen is the instructor of the online class "Crocheting With Beads" found at AnniesCatalog.com She has been interviewed on the television show, Knit and Crochet Now!

Ellen has been crocheting since she was 10. Her first design was a 3 dimensional Rubik's Cube made of granny squares. From there, her fondest crochet memory is crocheting a blanket with her mother for her grandmother's birthday. Ellen can't remember exactly who taught her to crochet but believes that it seeped into her consciousness from an early age from her Great Aunt, Tanta Margaret, who resided next door.

Ellen abandoned crochet as a teenager only to pick it back up again while in Graduate School at the University of Cincinnati. She has crocheted obsessively ever since, stitching more than 80 afghans before beginning her design career in 2004.

When not crocheting, Ellen enjoys reading, knitting, jogging and chocolate cake. Ellen lives in Ohio with her husband Tom and their two children.

Bruges Lace was totally knew to me and although I knew it was a form of crochet I didn't know anything else about it. Ellen's introduction explains that that Bruges lace is a variation on bobbin lace that originated in Brugge, Belgium. She goes on to give an excellent description of what Bruges Lace is. More importantly, she provides you with easy-to-understand instructions for learning this technique in crochet.

In fact, Ellen makes it really easy to learn the techniques by including options for every learning style:

- Clear text description. Since I'm a wordy girl, I apprecated this. There are notes that add helpful information to the basic pattern instructions.
- Photos. They are large and clear. Great for visual crafters!
- Stitch diagram. If you like working from symbol charts then you won't be disappointed because these are included as well.

Once you learn the basics, you've got eight different patterns to work in this book and they are varied in terms of what they are (not all just scarfs, for example) so you get a lot of bang for your buck. Recommended!

This is a great book to learn a new technique - Bruges Lace. It's basically crochet in a special way that is so easy to learn and really adds some nice design techniques to your everyday items. I have had many books and patterns by Ellen Gormley and all of her materials are well written, easy to follow and usually diagrammed. Best of all, she is easily reachable via her Ravelry Group and will answer questions as quickly as possible.

Tradiitionally Bruges Lace Crochet was done with very thin crochet cotton. This book modernizes Bruges Lace by using yarn for the projects while teaching you Bruges Lace Crochet. The pictures are excellent and shows the symbols traditionally used.
