This DVD teaches you how to pronounce the four tones with some violin or piano illustration. The author does most of the talking and offers some good points in helping the learners feel and remember the tones. The music illustration is good for teachers who are not musically talented so you can just show it in class and have the video explain things. From the perspective of entertainment, I think this video is pretty much like a home-made video, where the author talks a lot... If you or your students are good listeners and learn from lectures well, you can definitely use this. But I got bored after the first 10 minutes and had to fast-forward to get the gist of his lecture. Nothing, except for the music, is new or that innovative, from my perspective. But maybe that is just because I had very high expectation for this video, especially at this price. Overall, I got something out of it, but paid more that what I feel it is worth.

I attended a Chinese class and found the Chinese tones to be very tricky. Unfortunately the teacher didn't spend enough time to work on the tones and I have a feeling though I remember the words but people could not understand me when I talk. It's because Chinese is a tonal language and a sound can have 4 different tones and each means completely different things. I searched and found this DVD, it's really incredible. The teacher used violin, piano, voice and hand gestures to demonstrate and explain the different tones. My teach spend ten minutes on the tones, in this DVD the teacher spent hours focus on the four tones... by the end of watching this DVD, I already feel more confident. The video quality can be a bit better. But the teaching style is super innovative and effective. Highly recommended.
