Editorial Reviews

Aaron Gilmartin takes you on an excursion into the lush jazz chords, seductive rhythms and haunting melodies of bossa nova s greatest hits. Each of these timeless Brazilian tunes has permeated musical culture worldwide, and has been heard on numerous recordings, film soundtracks and in performances by top pop and jazz artists. After an important overview of how jazz chords and voicings are built, Aaron starts you off with O Barquinho (Little Boat), a perfect introduction to the bossa nova style. One Note Samba, by Antonio Carlos Jobim, has become an international jazz standard, recorded by Sinatra, Streisand, Ella Fitzgerald, Stan Getz and many other stars. Wave, another well-known Jobim composition, is all about samba, the rhythmic underpinning of all bossa nova songs. Aaron teaches each of these pieces in focused, measure-by-measure detail, clearly explaining the rhythms, jazz harmonies, syncopations, bass grooves and melodic elements that will make these iconic pieces come alive under your fingers. Note: These pieces can be played on any guitar, but a nylon-string classical will give you the most authentic Brazilian sound.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful By Paul J. Tetreault Jr. on May 4, 2012
I have only worked through about a third of Aaron Gilmartin's "Learn the Classics of Bossa Nova Guitar #1" but wanted to alert prospective buyers to a problem.

As of May 2012, what's on the page ain't what's on the stage - the sheet music differs from what Aaron plays on the DVD, at least in the chord examples and the first sixteen bars of O Barquinho, which is as far as I've gotten through it (it's only 20 bars long). The differences are significant. Be prepared to fire up Guitar Pro and create your own charts. Fortunately he teaches very carefully so it is easy to see exactly what IS being played.

The book for this package is a 7 page PDF. There's a page of chord examples, O Barquiho and One Note Samba are each about a page and a half, and Wave is two pages. Maybe someone who has worked all the way through the package can comment on whether the other songs are accurately transcribed. I checked at Homespun's website and do not see a corrected PDF for the package.

If you're a competent finger-style player, have rhythm, and don't mind doing your own transcribing you'll enjoy this. Two stars because for 30 bucks the charts should be accurate.

Great DVD. The three full songs that are taught are beautiful and progressively challenging. Gilmartin is a natural teacher and gifted guitarist.
