5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book for a Beginner!
This book is easy to follow with step by step instructions & illustrations on all the basics. It takes you thru each step with extreme detail and helpful hints. I bought several books to help me learn to crochet, but this was the only one I used!
I would highly recommend it for any beginner! I will also keep it as a "how to" reference.

3.0 out of 5 stars Review by a total novice/clumsy oaf
I bought this book to (once and for all) learn the basics of crochet. I've tried a number of times over the years and learned to make a chain stitch and little else. This is my baseline skill level with needlework: I can sew a button if I give it supreme concentrated effort, and anything involving the idea of "cross stitch" as a relaxing pastime brings on thoughts of...

I adore this book. As a knitter, I'd been finding more and more patterns embellished with crochet details. I tried to teach myself but a lot of books were too wordy and not basic enough. I can't rave enough about the pictures in this book....they are very very clear...what the stitch should look like, where you put the hook, etc. True to the title, I was crocheting the same day I picked it up and had completed one project the first weekend.

I had signed up to take a crochet class before I bought this book. The class was so badly taught that a few of the students came over to me to share my copy of this book. By the end of the class the students using my book were crocheting! It is that good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best I've seen so far for a beginner!, October 8, 2004
I have trying to teach myself to crochet on/off for about 8 mos now. I actually started an afghan that's all single crochet and "thought" I was doing it correctly. I had to put it away because we moved our family out of state. During this time I have been practicing my stitches making small sample squares. I was getting frustrated because according to the other books I have, I was doing it correctly. But, the edges of my sc samples seemed really lacey or "holey".

Last night I was unpacking a box and came across this booklet. After spending about 15 minutes reading the basic sc instructions I realized I had been doing it wrong this whole time! This booklet has THE BEST illustrations compared to all the others I have purchased! Between the instructions and wonderful diagrams, I discovered that I was going into the 3rd ch from the hook instead of the 2nd (which is where I should have been). None of my other books or booklets for beginners shows you where your hook should go as well as this booklet.

Also, as a new crocheter, I was having trouble with that "elusive" last stitch on each row. NONE of my other instruction books actually show it. This one does and up close!

I plan on "frogging" my started afghan tonight and have no doubt that by tomorrow, I will have it restarted....CORRECTLY this time.

This is a wonderful booklet for beginners. THE BEST I'VE SEEN!!! Plus, its available in a version for left handers too!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's title is true!, October 9, 2003

This book is wonderful. I had never crocheted before except learning to do a chain as a child, which I had not done since then. I had always wanted to learn, but I never had anyone show me. With this book, I was immediately able to crochet using the instructions and fantastic illustrations. You can't mess up. I have now been crocheting for almost two years, and I just love it. It's a great stress reliever for me. I still refer back to this book for stitch guidance and other hints. This book is money well spent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maybe Not in "One Day" But This Book Really Does Work!!!, July 10, 2001

I bought this book several years ago because I had always wanted to learn how to crochet. Within a few days, I was crocheting some of the afghan patterns they include. The instructions are very clear and understandable. They start you out with the basics---from how to hold the hook to the chain stitch. As each lesson progresses, you crochet sample swatches in each of the 4 remaining stitches. Before you know it, you are moving on to one of several beginner projects. This book is a great teacher. I highly recommend it to anyone with a desire to learn.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent instructions for beginner!, January 18, 2006

I was attempting to learn crochet from a neighbor who learned it from her grandmother without the benefit of knowing all the terms or even all the various stitches. Feeling confused, I did some research and found this booklet.

Wow, what an amazing booklet! It was like a light bulb going off, finally understanding the basic stitches, how to count properly, where EXACTLY the hook should go through, and WHY the stitches require an extra chain (or 2 or 3) at the end of a row. It suddenly all made sense! I passed it on to a friend, and she had the same reaction. Now we can actually crochet something, instead of just focusing on trying to learn a few stitches.

I highly recommend this booklet to those who have never done crochet work or those who are beginning and need some clear, precise instructions.

This book was amazing. It had been about 25 years since I last crocheted so I really didn't remember the process. I did the samples over the course of a few days and then jumped right in to doing a doll blanket for my daughter. The pattern wasn't one in the book, but the book gave me enough clear understanding of the different stitches that I was confident I could do this basic project. I'm working on the heart-shaped hot-pad now for practice in reading patterns. I highly recommend this book. I loved the diagrams. I could tell exactly where the hook and yarn needed to go with each step.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can make afghans!, February 23, 2003

This book is so clear with it's instructions. I really learned how to crochet in one day (actually less than a day, I'd say a few hours at the most). This book is the next best thing to having someone actually show you how to crochet. The patterns are simple yet beautiful. This is a great book for anyone who wants to learn quickly.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased a couple of other learn to crochet books and they don't compare to this one. The pictures are very easy to follow. The only downside to this book is the patterns they include are pretty outdated.
