Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Lean Handwriting is professionally designed using current educational methods to help children learn and improve handwriting skills. Many teachers use Learn Handwriting with the D'Nealian lessons in the classroom. Since so much time is spent teaching computer skills at school, penmanship is practiced more and more in the home.

All Pen Notes books have been approved by the board of education and used by reading teachers nationwide. All books include a safe, non-toxic color pencil.

From the Inside Flap

Learning to write script should be an enjoyable experience, since children usually look forward to it as another step toward growing up. Praise and encouragement will make them feel more secure, especially if they are told that mistakes will happen and that their letters will look better with practice. This book shows the various strokes needed in five basic shapes. Time should be spent in tracing the shapes, with fingers first and then with a pencil, whenever they appear. Talking about the shape and size of each letter, as the child traces, will be helpful. Activities for practice on each page have been designed to be fun and also to provide learning experiences about a variety of topics of interest to intermediate grade level children.Hand and paper position for Left and Right hands are shown. Notes to parents are included from Dr. Wayne Goldberg, optometrist. With praise and encouragement, you will create a relaxed atmosphere that will insure success.

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful book, great for kids, April 13, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Learn Cursive Handwriting (Plastic Comb)
I bought this book for my 7 year old. She was learning how to write cursive at school but was still having some difficulty. This book really helped her overcome her struggle by allowing her to learn at her own pace. The techniques, such as first tracing the letter with your finger, proved successful. After a two weeks of reading the book and completing the exercises, my daughter's handwriting has drastically shown improvement.

2.0 out of 5 stars A reusable writing workbook, February 21, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Learn Cursive Handwriting (Plastic Comb)
This is a workbook for early beginners learn cursive. You can wipe off the surfaces again and again, so that's helpful. I would recommend this for a child just starting out learning cursive. Unfortunately, I needed something for a child father along. But we did go through the entire book and especially liked the helpful arrows showing how to write the letters. This cursive style is more of the fancier D'Nealian. I have found the "Writing Without Tears' much easier to teach, easier for children to use, and less complicated. I think all these little flourishes that teachers are still insisting on will one day go the way of typewriters. Most of us will (and do) use a more simplified style that can be written faster. That's what's now taught mainly in the U.K. That said, buy this if you want a reusable simple workbook.

This product was recommended for my son who needs occupational therapy for his handwriting. So far it's working great. He benefits from being able to write directly in the book, and he enjoys using a damp paper towel rather than an eraser to correct his mistakes. I'd like to know what to do to get replacement pencils, though.
