Merida is the adventurous Princess of DunBroch. More comfortable in the woods with her bow than in a ball gown, Merida would be perfectly content to ride her horse, Angus, around all day in the Sunshine.

Like most of the Disney characters, these are a little challenging for the very young to draw. Though I must say I still believe they would love to try and most likely be proud of their accomplishment. The step by step process helps breakdown how an artist visualizes the character drawing process.

If you haven't seen the movie, see it first as the book gives away the story except for the ending and some details. For those of you who don't read the dimensions (like me), the book is a standard 8 1/2 x 11 inches. The spine is quite sturdy and the pages are thicker than standard paper, but not as thick as cardstock paper. Mine did have a slight manufacturer's defect with the lamination on the cover, but I didn't think it was worth returning it. On the back is an age rating of 6+ which I think is fairly accurate. Some may need guidance with some of the detail, but you could also opt for tracing paper so they could practice doing the lines and shapes. You can click on the "Look Inside" to get a sample of how the steps are done to draw the characters.

Inside, there's a table of contents, the story (slight spoiler if you haven't seen the movie), tools you'll need, and how to use this book. If you're a beginner, it's helpful. One of the things I liked most was that it has some basic drawing exercises which will really help a beginner learn to see shapes (a book being rectangle, a teapot oval, doodles becoming birds and balloons, etc.) and how shapes correspond to drawing.

Now on to the main event. If you've clicked on the "Look Inside," you can see how to draw Merida. It starts with the head and an action line (the movement you're drawing the body along) and continues to add shapes like the rest of the body, then moves into finer details such as the hair. Some of the characters are a bit harder than others as they have more detail to draw, so I would recommend beginners start with the simpler characters to get the hang of it, or use some tracing paper to copy the line drawing of characters in order to get a feel for shapes and lines.

this has got to be one of the best "how to draw" books I have ever seen! It has tips of details and how to and how not to on certain characters. I gave this as a gift to a 4th grade girl, and she is absolutely thrilled with it!

This book really helps with being able to draw the latest Disney/Pixar princess, Merida. The instructions are for someone who has an idea of how to draw, but that is the only caveat I can see. I've enjoyed using it.

We were at Disneyland before the movie opened. We waited to see Merida in person and our daughter got to shoot a bow and arrow. Easily the longest line we waited in that day. Later, my daughter saw this book and really wanted it but so early in the day, we did not want to carry it around. Then it was too late to try to find it and buy it in the stores on our way out. Glad to have found it on Amazon finally!
Our 7y.o. daughter has had the book now about four days and has already made about 6 drawings and getting better each time. She takes the book everywhere with her.

Recommend to anyone who wants to learn to draw and is fascinated with Disney.
