5.0 out of 5 stars Hannah is over the reading hurdle!
We just started this program with our 6 year old daughter, Hannah and she is doing phenomenally well! She has never had an easy time with reading but something about this format - whether it's the brief lessons or multi-sensory approach - is really working for her. I would highly recommend if your child is struggling with reading or if you just want a comprehensive...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the best!
This program in my opinion is backward. It starts kids reading the endings of words first then adding the first letter. It did not work with my kids. My son hated reading because of it. We have gone to Sing Spell read and Write with the best Joy and success.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product. Works very quickly., January 9, 2007
Our 6-year old doesn't have much of an attetion span and can only keep occupied on this product for close to 5 minutes a day. With those 5 minutes, he's already increased his vocabulary two-fold.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anyone can learn to read, March 16, 2007
As an educator I am amazed at how easy, functional, and fun this curriculum actually is. My son enjoys it much more than his 'school' work and his reading skills have grown by leaps and bounds. Open the box, take out the workbook, insert the CD, and let the learning begin. I can't wait for him to finish this one so we can move to the next.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not as good kindergarten edition, August 5, 2008
This review is from: Learn to Read First Grade Edition (Hardcover)
My 4 year old went through the kindergarten edition in about 6 weeks so I ordered the first grade edition. It's the same process as the kindergarten edition- learn the sounds, read the review words and the story, and learn the helper words. The stories are longer so lessons take a longer time to do. The only problem I found was with the CD. The lady is speaking much faster and my child had trouble keeping up. We're not using the CD in this first time around. If my child masters the lessons well, we might use it in the second time we go through this. Other than the CD, we had no problems with the HOP's first grade edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really does work, July 16, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My grandson loved the Kindergarten one, so I bought this 1st grade one next. This level does not include a computer game disk for a PC, but uses audio CDs. At this point he is over half thorugh it and does actually enjoy it. He does not like the women's voice on the audio (pretty much because she repeats it over and over) so my daughter stops the audio and says it herself. She has no issues with that and feels very positive about it. So it a winner to us.

5.0 out of 5 stars this is an awesome product, May 21, 2007
I am working with my kindergartener on this and he loves it enough to listen to him when he's not working with the book. Fof anyone whose child's reading skills are emerging, this is a wonderful system. I can't say enuogh good things about it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best learning tool our family has used, October 15, 2009

I purchased this for my grand daughter awhile back. She was struggling with quite a few words and sounds. My son would bring out the Hooked on Phonics every couple of days and work with my grand daughter. As soon as a couple of weeks had passed my grand daughter was so much more knowledgable with her words and the sounds that certain letters made together, such as "ph", she did not understand how "ph" would sound like an "f" sound before. This program/product also gave her and her dad time together to bond. I recommend this product highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome product!, November 6, 2007
My kid is in KG and is 6 years old, she has finished the Learn to read KG and the first grade system. She finished both of them in 6 months. We spend 10 minutes every day. The books are very well written and are perfect for a kid. I don't use the audio CD as they tend to slow things down and are hard to focus on for a kid.

I would suggest not wasting your money on any other product or software (Because I have!). The only other books I found good are Dr Suess's books This is very easy for the parent as you just have to follow the steps in the books, which are very easy.

After finishing the First Grade system. My kid was able to read most of The Cat in the Hat by Dr Suess all by herself.

The HOP series is a great tool for teaching children to read. It introduces a lot of phonics, but also sight words
(high frequency words.) My son just turned 4 and he completed the Kindergarten box and is half way through the 1st grade box. But he can now read mini-chapter books we get at the Library, i.e. I Can Read series.
This is a good guide for helping parents know where to start. However, you have to get other books at the library or bookstore to read at least 15-20 minutes additional each day to really build confidence and comprehension.

Good product.

Kids seem to like it, but get bored within 15-20 minutes, but I do see a lot of progress...

A definate would buy again! I figure 15-20 mins with progress is great! Better than otehr things we have tried where they refuse to do it at all.........
