4.0 out of 5 stars best value for useful info, August 14, 2004
By
Nuts4knits "DB" (Middle Tennessee) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Learn to Knit Socks (Paperback)
I have recommended this to several beginner sock knitters. The instructions are goof-proof. Straight forward and spelled out clearly, it is a great resource for those who want to learn the basics. If you can knit, purl, and pick up stitches, you can learn sock knitting from this book. It was also my first dpn project, and now I use them frequently and fearlessly.

The patterns are nice. They are all for women, and they can be a bit snug (I'm an 8 1/2 regular), but you'll end up with some nice socks and new techniques when you are done. Her directions for the kitchener stitch are really good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn to knit socks with ease, March 20, 2004
This review is from: Learn to Knit Socks (Paperback)
This book is value priced and has all the information needed to learn how to know socks. All the socks are knitted in thicker yarns (like DK) so the beginner will have an easier time of manipulating the 3 plus 1 double pointed needles. The author chose to make the patterns for sets of 4 double points, but you can figure out how to use 4 (divide the knitting into four parts, not three.)

There are a dozen patterns here, enough to amuse the knitter after he or she learns the basics, and to teach how to vary sock patterns yourself by studying how the basic sock method can be adjusted for stripes, patterns, and there's even the amusingly titled "Yours, Mine and Argyles." Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE book for learning to knit socks on double pointed needles, October 29, 2005
By
The Sock Lady (Philadelphia, PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Learn to Knit Socks (Paperback)
I got this book when I wanted to learn to knit socks after a long hiatus from knitting. I was barely comfortable with yarn and needles again and had never made socks before. Edie's book is the perfect beginner book. It teaches the mystery of the double points, the anatomy of a sock and the closing of the toes in clear, detailed instructions. The basic sock pattern is simple and the basis for all 12 designs in the book. That it uses four size 3 (3.25 mm) needles and DK or sport weight yarn makes handling easier for inexperienced fingers. There is even a review of the knit and purl stitches. Start with the hints for yarn, sizing and GAUGE. Follow with the cast on and row by row instructions to make the sock. End with the fully explained toe weaving (Kitchener Sitch). It's all there in words and true-to-size drawings.
