A New Approach to Learning a Language: New Book a Valuable Tool for Acquiring Fluency, July 12, 2005
This review is from: Learn a Language Your Own Way: Acquire proficiency in a foreign language using effective and efficient self study techniques. (Paperback)
CELINA, Ohio, June 13, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- In his new book, Michael A. Stelzer makes the thrill of learning a new language accessible to those lacking time, cash and patience. "Learn a Language Your Own Way" (now available through AuthorHouse) outlines a plan to acquire proficiency in a foreign language by using effective and efficient self-study techniques.
All language enthusiasts, regardless of their current levels of understanding, benefit from Stelzer's proven methods. As a self-taught speaker of French, German and Mandarin Chinese, he has put his ideas to the test with impressive results. He divides the book into sections related to each element of learning a new language: understanding, speaking, reading and writing. He thoroughly explains ways that people can begin to grasp each of these.
Stelzer also tailors his explanations to a variety of learners. Some people prefer teaching themselves in an active manner by setting aside time each day to devote to their goal. Others prefer to take a more passive approach, and the author touches on the benefits and drawbacks of each technique. He also offers tips on getting access to inexpensive study materials.
From a discussion on the most commonly spoken languages today to informative advice on tackling the sometimes daunting pursuit of fluency, Learn a Language Your Own Way topples the barriers that keep inquisitive, willing students of foreign tongues away from the exciting world of language proficiency.
Stelzer is an author, athlete and engineer. Set to receive a doctorate in electrical engineering in June 2005, he is a martial arts champion, bodybuilder and fencer. He holds novice certification in several languages and is a U.S. Navy veteran.

I had issues with this book, July 6, 2007
This review is from: Learn a Language Your Own Way: Acquire proficiency in a foreign language using effective and efficient self study techniques. (Paperback)
I barely made it beyond the introduction due to the repetitive nature of the author's writing and his issues with grammar. The many dangling prepositions caused me to wonder two things: 1) where was the editor in the development of this book and 2) should I depend on someone who doesn't have an accurate grasp on the English language to lead me in techniques for learning other languages? My copy ended up in the recycling bin.
