Biography

When the Southern singer-songwriter Jesse Winchester passed away in April 2014, a few weeks shy of his 70th birthday, he left behind a legacy of distinctively insightful, gentle, frequently humorous country/folk songs about everyday people and their lives that became hits for other performers while he painstakingly crafted new classics to share.

Long before the Long Tall Texan copped big league cred as a smart, funny, courtly, intelligent singer-songwriter, Memphis' Jesse Winchester set a really high bar on rootsy Southern music. I still remember soaking up his debut album in my dorm room, and after graduation I eagerly sought each of the succeeding albums from this overlooked master. A conscientious objector who observed life from exile in Montreal, he may have missed the singer-songwriter boom of the '70s, but not for any lack in quality. This was his third album, mixing his own great songs with the first songs from Russell Smith, another neglected Southern master, who made some great, now unavailable records with the Amazing Rhythm Aces.

During that dark ugly time in US history when 'patriots' were demanding, "America! Love it or leave it!" Jesse Winchester chose to go to Canada instead of being drafted to serve against Vietnam. By the time he recorded this album he knew the cost of his expatriotism. President Carter didn't give out the medals the country owed to those who had the courage not to serve, but at least he pardoned them. It was a good album. A lot better than it needed to be to get my support.

The genius died far too soon in April, 2014, and fans will always wish he had written and recorded more. This is arguably Winchester's best CD/LP, although it is very short even by vinyl standards. The songs are also often short, there are not a lot of solos, and he sings two Russell Smith originals, so the Winchester portion is even shorter. It is simply a really good record.
