Book Description

October 1, 1998 Learn Now
"Learn Visual J++ Now" introduces Windows-based programmers and less experienced developers to the latest version of Visual J++ and how to get the most out of it. Readers learn how to create an application and see what's going on in the process. Other topics include an overview of Java and Microsoft's implementation of Java; working with classes, objects, and forms; creating, enhancing, and animating applets; Java packages; and multimedia in WinDirect, console applications, and creating new components. Appendixes provide quick reference to Java syntax, event-driven programming, and database access. The accompanying CD includes a time-limited version of Microsoft Visual J++ (90 days from installation) and sample files.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

For a quick and useful tour of essential Visual J++ features and capabilities, Learn Microsoft Visual J++ 6.0 Now can get you up and running fast. This title combines an introduction to the Java programming language with instruction on how to create basic applets, including animated applets, before teaching how to build Java applications. The book also covers topics such as input/output (I/O) and how to call Win32 API functions using J/Direct. Along the way, the authors introduce Windows Foundation Classes (WFC) and component development--a real strength of the new Visual J++. This book allows the developer with at least some programming experience to get started in the world of Visual J++ development. --Richard Dragan

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Your First Book on Computer Programming, April 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Learn Microsoft Visual J++ 6.0 Now (Learn Now) (Paperback)
Let me emphasize that this is not a book for people with no prior programming experience. Familiarity with basic object oriented programming conventions is assumed by the author. If you do not have the requisite background (proabably C++) the "labs" are confusing and hard to follow. If you've programmed before, but are new to Java, this is probably a good book with which to start, especially if you're working in the MS Visual Studio environment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sorry to disagree..., March 31, 2000
This review is from: Learn Microsoft Visual J++ 6.0 Now (Learn Now) (Paperback)
My apologies for disagreeing with those who didn't like this book. Personally I found it to be superb. As the title suggests, it's all about getting your hands dirty straight away. I found this way of instruction to be exactly what I needed.

The text provides a digestible dose of information, then some exercises to get the user comfortable with what is being taught, before moving on with the more advanced topics. Using this rationale, the reader can proceed self paced, while instilling confidence and experience to build on.

Yes, its definitely for beginners, but after working through this book you emerge with enough knowledge to program some very useful apps/applets.

Remember, the cover says 'Includes a 90 day trial version of Visual J++ 6.0', and the CD is specially for this book, but on the CD, I got what appeared to be a full version of Visual J++ 6.0 Professional, obviously not licensable but not time limited in my experience either. Apply the latest service packs, though.

Thoroughly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for Application Developers, November 28, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Learn Microsoft Visual J++ 6.0 Now (Learn Now) (Paperback)
This is kind of an odd book, because it's a MS Press book and it has very little information on MS Java specifics like WFC. This is a "rank-beginner" book. It also has quite a bit on applets, and console apps which in not why I bought and use VJ6. If you want to create WFC applications for Windows with J++6, get the Developer's Workshop instead. If you know nothing about Java, you may want to start here.
