4.0 out of 5 stars Learn Needle Tatting Step by Step
I think this book is over-priced; the only reason I do not give it five stars. HOWEVER: This is an excellent book on the basics of needle tatting. If you do not have access to a teacher in your area, this is probably your best bet for starting off. I have purchased several tatting books, and those few that offer an explanation of needle tatting are bewhildering...

1.0 out of 5 stars Do Not Waste Your Money--Just do an online search for instructions.
This book is extremely basic. It does not offer anything that can not be found on the internet. I have only been Needle Tatting for 6 months. I started with what I learned on the internet. I thought this book would give great insight and extra instruction. Nope. I did not learn a single thing from this book that can not be found online for free. There were not more...

Be advised that nearly every shuttle tatting pattern that I have tried is can be done with a needle, which is much faster than using a shuttle and also results in smoother joins.

The only tatting patterns that have frustrated me as a needle tatter are the square medallions. The tatting needle is too long to be able to manipulate in the tight areas needed for such designs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for anyone wanting to learn tatting., September 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Learn Needle Tatting Step by Step (Paperback)
I have always wanted to learn tatting but had problems understanding the patterns and how to use a shuttle. This is an excellent book very easy to follow instructions and illistrations. I was able to create wonderful doilies and bookmarkers for family members and friends for gifts, they loved them. Wish there were more patterns. I would recommend this book to others.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent choice for anyone wanting to try tatting., November 25, 1998
By A Customer
Having never tatted before, I was able to read, practice and create beautiful medalians (which I turned into Christmas ornaments) on my first day with the books! The only thing that could have made it better would have been the addition of a few more patterns. I would highly recommend!

4.0 out of 5 stars Needle tatting for the complete beginner, July 29, 2005
This review is from: Learn Needle Tatting Step by Step (Paperback)
This book is aimed at the needle tatter who is picking up the tatting needle for the first time. It does not teach the 19th century method of tatting with needles which basically uses the needle as if it is a shuttle, but the method of forming double stitches on the tatting needle and pulling the needle through the stitches. Special needles are required for this lace which can be obtained from the author's online tatting lace shop, which is heavily promoted in the book.

The instructions provided are very clear and profusely illustrated with many photographs of the lace being worked. There are few patterns and those which are included have been carefully chosen to teach the beginner essential techniques which are covered in the book. These include how to make the double stitch, form a true ring, how to form what is now called the self closing mock ring, how to make joins using the tatting needle (the methods taught are different from those used in shuttle tatting), how to make chains, how to finish ends, how to join in new threads and how to do two colour work. I am a little concerned at the introduction of new, trademarked terminology to describe some of these techniques as this confuses many beginners who join the online tatting mailing lists and groups.

The book could have included more patterns and most people will master the techniques covered very quickly. This book therefore may not prove to be a lasting reference work but it's a good introduction to the art of tatting lace using a tatting needle and can be recommended for this purpose.

There were not more that a few patterns were so basic I had already tatted similar items on my own without any instruction. Do not waste your money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Can Get Way Cheaper From Her Site, October 8, 2011
This review is from: Learn Needle Tatting Step by Step (Paperback)
This book is overpriced on Amazon. The cheapest they're selling it for on Amazon is $30.00. You can buy it directly from Barbara's site hhtatting.com for $12.95. Don't be fooled!!!

This book was exactly the right book for me to order! I had been shown how to needle tat by a friend, but there were several areas of the process that I didn't fully understand. This book is clear and concise with lots of pictures to explain each step. I completed a small project the day after I opened the book. What a thrill! I would definitely recommend this book for a beginner that wants step-by-step instructions and great photos to go by.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guidebook for beginners!, February 11, 2011
This review is from: Learn Needle Tatting Step by Step (Paperback)
I received this book about two weeks ago and am already making some beautiful medallions! The directions are very clear and explicit, and the numerous pictures demonstrate exactly what you are to do. You learn quickly through experience how the fabric should lay and how the thread should feel. A needle-tatter can also follow the same patterns that shuttle-tatters do, as the terminology is the same, and the book explains how to do this. This is a wonderful book and I've already advanced to intermediate patterns in other books because of how quickly I was able to learn the techniques. A great investment for a beginner!
