5.0 out of 5 stars PLAYING GOSPEL, November 10, 2001
This review is from: Learn to Play Gospel Piano, Video One [VHS] (VHS Tape)
If you are a musician who wants to know the fundamentals of playing gospel music this is the perfect video. Ethel Caffie-Austin does a magnificient job in introducing to you the techniques, terms and fundamental elements of Gospel music. Using familiar spirituals and hymns, Caffie-Austin goes step by step in showing you how these sacred songs can be embellished just through simple techniques.

As a beginner in Gospel music you will enjoy the step by step approach given in her demonstration. Emphasis is placed on learning one technique well and then building on another. She constantly challenges you in doing a little bit more with the songs and offers you a variety of alternatives in playing the piece in different keys.

I enjoyed her enthusiasm as she played each piece and explained what she was doint in terms of her technique. There are some musicians who can read music but are unable to do any improvisation with the notes. Caffie-Austin shows how you can "gospelize" the hymn by using simple chording techniques.

I highly recommend this video for those who are beginners in playing Gospel Music as well as those who are adept at it. The teacher offers a fresh and vibrant approach in teaching the discipline that one may not find in regular piano classes. By all means get this video and try out your skills in learning how to play Gospel piano.
