Editorial Reviews

LEARN TO READ WITH PHONICS, VOLUME TWO: SOUNDABLE WORDS/LONG AND SHORT VOWELS Any child can quickly master the elements of successful reading with the use of Phonics. The Phonics technique is widely recognized by experts as one of the easiest and most effective ways of teaching the fundamentals of reading. With twenty-one years of experience behind her, Certified Reading Specialist Barbara Phipps knows how to make learning to read fun with a little help from her fuzzy friend Snoothy. Soundable Words Mrs. Phipps presents five stories acted out by children, during which she sounds out each word as it appears on the screen, reads the sentence, and then encourages your children to read along. Your children will receive the reinforcement they need with the use of soundable words, repeated vocabulary, word groups, and word families. All this takes place while they are being entertained by the lovable, furry Snoothyguzzlesmort. Approximately 62 minutes Color Long and Short Vowels Mrs. Phipps uses music, humor, graphics, and colors to teach your children about long and short vowels, contractions, and punctuation marks. Kids easily identify with the simple and straightforward stories that are acted out by other children, thus helping them remember what they learn. Questions are asked after each story to help improve your children’s retention skills. Approximately 51 minutes Color Snoothy Played by JANE HALL Music and Lyrics Written and Performed by JANE HALL Produced and Directed by TOM KROUTIL A PKH PRODUCTION ?1991 Barbara Phipps

2.0 out of 5 stars We prefer Leap Frog series, May 16, 2006
This review is from: Learn to Read With Phonics Vol 2: Soundable Words / Long and Short Vowels (DVD)
This second volume is certainly superior in video quality to the first volume, and it is educational. However, we are disturbed by the prolonged boxing scene between two children where spectators cheer for hitting abilities, and the use of the exclamation "shut up!" We find that the Leap Frog series provides similarly good education, more captivating entertainment, and no troubling content.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dated methods; poor quality; deceptive marketing, June 9, 2008
By
This review is from: Learn to Read With Phonics Vol 2: Soundable Words / Long and Short Vowels (DVD)
The 2005 release date is indicative of the product's new titling and packaging only. The children pictured on the box are not featured in the video. The video appears to have been made in the 70's or 80's at best. Sound is muffled. Phonics teaching methods have come a long way since this. The instructor pronounces letters "M-uh", "L-uh", etc. When she makes a mistake, she corrects herself and goes on. There are no retakes. At one point, her marker doesn't work and she said to herself, "I hope your marker doesn't mess up like mine." Who was she talking to? I wish I had known about the original production date when I made this purchase. I feel deceived.
I highly recommend Rock-N-Learn Phonics. It is complete (I can't find a phonics skill that is not covered), and it is captivating, at least to my child.

1.0 out of 5 stars Made in 1991 but looks like 1971, October 31, 2007
This review is from: Learn to Read With Phonics Vol 2: Soundable Words / Long and Short Vowels (DVD)
Don't be fooled by other reviews. This video is a poor copy of a VHS into DVD. The picture quality and sounds is terrible. The original recording is from 1991, but the poor quality makes it look like it's from 1971. The teaching can not keep my son's attention for more than a few minutes - and he loves to watch these kind of videos. Don't buy this recycled junk.
