5.0 out of 5 stars terrific motivational game for beginning or reluctant reader
This is a terrific, practical little book for you and your beginning or reluctant reader. After a friendly introduction in which the author discusses various methods of reading instruction, the book contains the clues and solutions for 50 treasure hunts! Just tear out the pages, fold them and place them in the appropriate spots. For example, Treasure Hunt 1: Clue 1...

3.0 out of 5 stars the idea is great, but who's in charge of quality control???
When I read the online reviews for this product I felt tremendously appreciative of this whole concept. I was excited to get started with my own daughter.
However, I was disappointed when I recieved this book and discovered that the 2nd clue from the 2nd hunt was missing as well as all the pages for hunts 3 through 8! So I paid for 50 treasure hunts but I only...

This is a terrific, practical little book for you and your beginning or reluctant reader. After a friendly introduction in which the author discusses various methods of reading instruction, the book contains the clues and solutions for 50 treasure hunts! Just tear out the pages, fold them and place them in the appropriate spots. For example, Treasure Hunt 1: Clue 1 tells you to "Look under a pan", Clue 2 reads "Look under your bed", Clue 3 says "Look under the bath mat" and the solution page reads "Great. You did it! Come get your sticker." There are even 50 stickers at the back of the book (the idea of the author's son, who contributes a charming introduction as well). Each solution also has a bonus game of matching words to pictures, and successive hunts get more challenging in length and vocabulary.

This is a terrific idea, well executed and thought out. Who doesn't love a treasure hunt? You'll undoubtedly be looking for a sequel or be inspired to construct your own treasure hunts when you finish these fifty exercises.

Excellent resource.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun, and oh so educational!, January 18, 2003

I don't usually write book reviews, but this book is such a winner! My 5-1/2 year old daughter loves to do these treasure hunts as soon as she wakes up in the morning or when she returns from school. Not only is it fun, but it's educational too -- practice reading and following instructions. The sheer fun and receiving the sticker at the end of the hunt are more than enough to entice her to play. In fact, she keeps asking for more hunts! I'll definitely order more copies of this book and give them away as gifts -- perfect for 5 to 7 year olds.

My four year old loves to do these treasure hunts! It has been very helpful in teaching him to read. He is halfway through the book and reads most of the clues by himself. Great teaching tool!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great idea!, August 20, 2003

My daughter is just starting to read, is literally on her first words, so even the first hunts are a bit too hard. However, I have taken the idea and made my own hunts with snigle words she does know. Once she can string a short sentence together, then I will start using hunts from the book. She loves doing the hunts I've made for her and I can tell the whole experiment will be a reading success!

This is a small, fat book with pages that you tear out to hide for your kids. You could just make up hunts yourself, but why when the book is so inexpensive? Plus, you can use thm over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great way to keep up with reading this summer!, July 31, 1999

This review is from: Learn-to-Read Treasure Hunts: Fifty Skill-Building Games for Beginning Readers and Their Parents (Paperback)
This book has been a treat for my six year old and four year old this summer. It's taken the headache out of encouraging my older son to keep up with reading this summer--no hastles! He looks forward to doing each hunt, and hasn't even asked for a reward for completing them! I plan to reuse this in two years for my younger son. Don't worry parents--it takes only a minute or two to hide the clues, and each is marked where to put it. Great fun! Now, if the author could just create a treasure hunt that involved writing practice...

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent, fun tool for parents to enjoy and kids love!, January 20, 1999

This review is from: Learn-to-Read Treasure Hunts: Fifty Skill-Building Games for Beginning Readers and Their Parents (Paperback)
I stumbled on this through Children's Book of the Month Club. My son loved it from the very first...he often asks for me to remember to "make tomorrow a treasure hunt day". The earliest groups, each having four clues, include more drawings as hints. As they progress there is more word description and less picture help. The award sticker incentives have not been motivating for my son...he just loves having the challenge and feeling successful. I am sure that many children would find them a treat! The final page of each hunt includes a fun, thematic match-up game...one more skill building opportunity which challenges without overwhelming. The style and tone of the coaching and instructions are particularly calming and encouraging for those parents and children who are reading resistant, as the author's son (and co-writer) was. A real winner...I love to give this book as a gift for those beginning this age group!

My 6-year-old nephew LOVES THIS! He now requests a Treasure Hunt every day and reminds his Mother if he doesn't get one. He doesn't even care about the 'reward' at the end--he just loves finding the clues! He's just finishing kindergarten tomorrow and they have already done 11 'hunts.'

I think we'll need a Volume Two!

5.0 out of 5 stars My child was hooked from page 1!, July 11, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Learn-to-Read Treasure Hunts: Fifty Skill-Building Games for Beginning Readers and Their Parents (Paperback)
These are wonderful reading games. My child is 4 years old and can do the first ones easily. (She's not a genius, just an average kid.) It takes about 5 minutes, tops. (except when she wants to do them over and over again) I plan to use them for incentive to get out of bed in the mornings. She hits the floor running when I tell her this is a treasure hunt day.

5.0 out of 5 stars We love this!, February 3, 2006
This review is from: Learn-to-Read Treasure Hunts: Fifty Skill-Building Games for Beginning Readers and Their Parents (Paperback)
My son just turned six, and we have a wonderful time with these for several reasons:
1. We both look forward to them every day
2. He feels a real sense of accomplishment (giggling the whole time) and it's even sparked his imagination in creating his own treasure hunts and an interest in maps.
3. What parent doesn't enjoy seeing their child laughing while learning?!

On school days I come back in and hide them after he gets on the bus. We're both always super-syked to get home and "do the hunt." On weekends and holidays, I hide them after my son has gone to bed. It's a great way to wake up!

When I brought this book home to my kids, they loved it. I loved it! I loved it so much I ordered a dozen more, and I've been giving them out as birthday gifts for the past few years. Now I'm down to my last one, just as my kindergartener is ready to read. This is something easy for parents, fun for kids, and educational for everyone--how can you go wrong?
