I studied Russian for several years at college, but started using Rosetta Stone since neglecting to maintain my skills. As other reviewers have mentioned, Rosetta Stone is somewhat like a glorified flashcard viewer and may be helpful with learning new vocabulary. Images and sentences appear on the screen and you are prompted to choose the correct words or case endings. Everything is multiple choice. Within the confines of that interface, the program can provide decent grammar and vocabulary drills, although it doesn't explain the grammar rules. The drills also tend to get very repetitive as the same sentences come up over and over again, which doesn't really challenge you to use the material you have learned. It's rote memorization, a method of learning that has significant drawbacks and limited benefit. Like running on a treadmill, it makes you think you are progressing a lot faster than you actually are. Also like a treadmill, you might find that all your work has taken you nowhere.

Case in point: I also bought Rosetta Stone Levels 1-5 for German to try to learn German as a total beginner, and having recently completed Level 1, I can say that very little of the material has actually stuck. I tried some of the interactive online games with another German student, and my mind totally blanked. After realizing that I actually didn't know any German, I decided to purchase some German language books online for some emergency remedial training.

For what it offers, I think Rosetta Stone is a bit overpriced as each language version I've used -- Russian, German, and Pashto -- is built upon the same cookie-cutter lesson plan, which completely ignores the grammatical and cultural aspects that are unique to every language. For example, case endings are fundamental to Russian grammar.

As a owner of 3 different Rosetta Stone series, I must say that Rosetta stones works to a ceratin degree. Where Rosetta stone excels is in vocabulary building, where it falls woefully short is in developing conversation skills. After using the product for several weeks I felt like a kindergaten child able to say the "the dog smells bad because it is wet" but incapable of having a even rudimentary adult conversation. So I gave up on Rosetta and bought the Pimsleur Method. Soon by using Pimsleur, I found I could order food, book a hotel room and have a basic converstion about the weather, one's family, etc. If this is your thrust, I would choose the Pimsleur Method over Rosetta hands down, but what I later realized was how well Rosetta compliments Pimsleur (and probably other conversation based methods). I remembered many nouns learned from Rosetta and suddenly by essentially combining the two methods, my language skills really took off. So my adivice is to start with Pimsleur and then add in Rosetta Stone as together such a approach will yield phenominal results. Of course this will require a bigger $ as neither is inexpensive, but alone, I fear Rosetta stone will not give you what you seek.

Downsides of Rosetta Stone:

- Expensive.
- Can only be downloaded on one computer.
- Exercises can become a tad monotomous but perhaps this is needed to achieve understanding.

I'm a non-native English speaker and my first language is Portuguese. I grew up immersed in English due to entertainment (watching movies, reading books, listening to music) and travelling. During this time I used little subtitles and little translation and always used my senses and my intuition to get English. Because of my experience in learning language by immersion while growing up I always got Excellent on English at a Portuguese school with little effort. My mother's maternal language is Russian and I have been saying to her that I will learn her native language since early adolescence but I never had the time so I decided to put it off until I finished high school now. I reasoned that since immersion is how I learned my 1st second language (English) and achieved fluency that I would use same technique for my 2nd second language (Russian). I've only finished half-way through Russian level 1 and my mother is amazed at how much I've learned. While I can speak some Russian I've found that I'm understanding Russian more clearly (speaking - good, understanding - very good). I can say that arguably the greatest strength, and weakness, of Rosetta Stone is that it doesn't translate English to another language but that it focuses on the target language with little translation. I understand how frustating this can be to some individuals and I advise to look elsewhere. For myself this was the best method imaginable and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Upsides of Rosetta Stone:

- Focuses on target language (more immersion, less translation = learning like a native).

Rosetta Stone Russian Levels 1-5 is great in the sense that:
1. it provides native audio for all phases of the learning
2. it teaches through a wide variety of sentences and expressions (compared to other language software)
3. it uses only Russian - forcing you to start thinking in Russian much quicker than a dual-language course
4. With the new TotalE, you also get live tutoring sessions (for 3 months included), so you can practice your language with someone
5. it actually comes out to be pretty cheap compared to taking a class at a language school, though you will obviously not get as much hands on instruction as in a language school. The whole course is about 80 hours of instruction plus 16 hours of tutorials, so it is about $4/hr.

Rosetta greatly accelerated my learning of Russian. I had such a good experience using this product that I feel compelled to address some of the negative reviewers:
- it's not really immersive: duh, it is a software - however, in the software you are forced to think only in Russian
- it's not good on its own: true, but why would you want to limit yourself to just using a single tool? You invested in a grammar book even in your native language, so that's just part of learning any language. I personally look up the grammar on the internet for free.
- it does not teach you the most useful phrases until later: on the contrary. Most language courses teach you things like "hello", "what's your name?", "please hand me your passport", "here is my passport", "I am from US". Rosetta teaches you things you would use first if you were living with someone: "water", "bread", "I am hungry". I was able to talk about what I needed, what I did that day much faster using Rosetta than by following another method.
