5.0 out of 5 stars Learn to Tat - wonderful tool
Learn to Tat was recommended by the teacher in the Tatting class and she was not wrong about the ease of learning at home from this book. The DVD is very easy to follow and the patterns are very good.

3.0 out of 5 stars Watch Out for Errors
The DVD may be good, but some of the patterns have errors in them and missing notation which may be a problem for beginners. The publisher is less careful than he should be. If you have trouble with shuttle tatting, you might try needle tatting... much much simpler. Barbara Foster books are excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely love it!, March 20, 2009

If you want to learn to tat, I recommend buying this book and DVD. I had only minimal knowledge about tatting, and this book/dvd enabled me to catch on very quickly. I think the DVD makes all the difference - seeing the actual tatting performed step by step and being shown what to do with your hands and the thread is what helped me to finally get things right. The book has some great patterns for all levels. I highly recommend this book/DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Learn to Tat Reference, October 15, 2009
This review is from: Learn to Tat (with DVD) (Paperback)
This is an excellent reference for a beginner tatter. The book is composed of "classes" which start simply and gradually add difficulty until you are comfortable with all the elements of tatting. There are a range of projects included in the book (with difficulty levels and clear instructions).

The real gem of the book is the included DVD. I wasn't expecting a high-quality production but it was surprisingly good. The DVD goes through all the same "classes" as the book and gives great closeups on stitch formation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice starter book, March 1, 2010
This review is from: Learn to Tat (with DVD) (Paperback)
This seems to be a great book for getting started with tatting. (I say "seems" to be because I'm very new to tatting and don't know if there's something better out there!). I love the way that the books starts with "classes" that bridge the gap between the basic technique and complex patterns. The author gives you some good guidance in what to practice before moving on to the next step.

I would give the book 5 stars except some of the basic instructions just don't make sense and you have to try a few things to figure out what they mean. Also, it's sometimes difficult to figure out what instructions go with what picture. But after some persistence and patience (and if you're lacking in those, tatting is not for you at all!) I got the basics down.

My only disappointment is that I find tatting much more difficult than crochet, but that is not the fault of the book!

Best details and instructions. Close up on the DVD were absolutely great and you cannot help but learn. I had seen others before and they cannot compare.

This is the best book on tatting I've ever seen. And the video is filmed slow enough so you can really follow. I never thought I'd see a tatting instruction book that was as good as hands on instruction, but this one is it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn to tat in 9 steps, August 19, 2011
This review is from: Learn to Tat (with DVD) (Paperback)
Comments:
- 50 page "pamphlet" + instructional DVD
- teaches traditional shuttle tatting method for both left and right handed.
- includes stitch guide, step-by-step classes, and 9 projects
- for shuttle tatting
- projects are an easy edge, small butterfly, heart, bookmark, a hankie edge, daffodil doily, table runner, ring edge and an edge that combines tatting and crochet. Skill range from "beginner" to "intermediate". The thing is, tatting isn't overly *hard* once you understand what you are doing. It is repetitive and fiddly. But once you have mastered how to put the bits together, move the shuttle (or shuttles) in your hands and how to read instructions, you should be okay.

Opinion:
I wanted to re-learn to tat. My Grandma taught me when I was little but I'd never had the patience to get far. And then a friend asked if I could tat her a steampunk-ish necklace. The problem was the best videos on-line were for needle-tatting and I wanted to use a shuttle. And then I found this book. This is *exactly* what I was after. The dvd works on my mac and in Australia (yay!), is easy to follow, and is directly related to the written reference material. The instructions go from the basic stitches to using two shuttles in 9 "classes" and then gives instructions for 9 projects. You learn to combine different colours and how work crochet and tatting together.

I was doing alright until the split chain came along. The instructions made no sense. The pictures or the video didn't help either. Little things here and there need a little tweaking. I think that if I weren't a crocheter first, I might be hopelessly lost.

The book itself is very basic. I don't know anything about tatting other than what's in this book but I certainly hope there's more to it than endless double stitches made on rings and chains.
