I tried to read this to my six year old but after a few pages he took my from me. He asked if he could read and laughed his way through the three stories. He thought Mat and Sam were both nice animals.

Mat the cat and Sam the dog are best friends. They are pictured in the first book snuggling together and doing things cats and dogs do. Sam gets a bath and then Mat gets a bath. I'd say don't try the cat bath thing at home! Cats tend to be a little afraid of water. After their baths Mat and Sam get to go to a party and wear party hats. This book then tries to teach children concepts like "up" and "down." The first book is pretty short, then there are two additional books - one book each for Mat and Sam.

Some of the pictures in the Sam book are pretty funny. Kids will recognize the same things happening in the second book. Like Sam gets a bath and goes to a party. Some of the new things he gets to do include walking in the snow and gazing out a window.

In the third book about Mat the cat, Mat wears a Christmas hat while drinking milk out of a glass. There are some pictures of Mat grooming himself but also a picture of Mat destroying a potted plant. Ooops. How I can relate to this with my own cats. Finally Mat decides he doesn't like wearing the silly hat and decides to go outside to play. He also does some tricks.

So these three little books are fun for very young children who love pets. A good book to have on your Kindle to entertain your kids while waiting in line or waiting at a doctor's office, etc.

All my grandchldren have learned basic words with the "Bob" books so this is a great addition to the sight word library for my youngest grandson. He has a disability and reading is going to be difficult for him. Right now he loves the Mat and Sam pictures, but hasn't connected the spelling of the words yet to the story. I'm convinced that will come.

These books provide simple stories with simple words and in doing so they allow children to experience the joy of reading when they first connect the word and the spelling.

I can't say enough good about Cindy Bracken's readers. My grandson, in kindergarten, is learning to read and he can already read the majority of her books. These readers use the basic sight words along with new words to keep the story fun. There is just enough of a challenge for a beginning reader, but easy enough for them to be successful. I recommend sitting with your child as he/she reads aloud. In our family, we try to read every night and I read to the children and then they also read aloud.

Book 1 - Mat and Sam
Mat is a car, Sam is a dog. This easy to read story shows them getting a bath, wearing hats and doing other activities together.

Book 2 - Sam
This book illustrates Sam and his owners and the child learns more about Sam. Simple sentences.

Book 3 - Mat
Many of these pages have two short sentences.

Great photography of a real cat and dog and large font for easy reading. Wonderful for beginning readers.

My 4yr old grandaughter loves Cindy's books and always asks when she comes for a visit what new books I got for her. Matt & Sam had her attention for quite a while. We both enjoy just sitting back and reading and having this available on my smart phone makes it so convenient. Cindy, keep up the great writing!!!

While I always LOVE this author's stuff, I especially like this collection because of the subject matter and the REAL photographs included. I'm dying to know if Sam and Mat belong to the author; the pictures are too cute!

Most highly recommended!
