Book Description

Learner Autonomy offers practical guidance on helping learners realise that their contribution to the teaching-learning process is crucial. It also encourages them to take an active role in their own learning. Rather than advocating radical changes in Classroom Management, it focuses on the gradual process of changing learner attitudes. The activities are designed to develop a comprehensive range of skills and attitudes including motivation, learning strategies, self-monitoring and co-operation. The activities can be easily integrated into the regular curriculum as almost all serve some linguistic purpose in addition to learner development.

4.0 out of 5 stars teacher centered - kick the habit, January 6, 2011

Like the book a lot and if you are looking for ways to develop learner autonomy in the classroom this is going to be a 5 star book, for sure. I picked it up as I am interested in all aspects of Language Teaching but find concepts rooted in Differentiated Instruction to be stronger for developing learner autonomy. If you have a background in DI, this may be a 3 star book.

It is not bad, not bad at all, and will be especially useful for teachers whom are teacher centered and wanting to kick this habit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, April 17, 2006

This review is from: Learner Autonomy: A Guide to Developing Learner Responsibility (Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers) (Paperback)
This is a practical guide of how to help your students become more independent. It's important for students to learn that they only benefit from education if they are willing to put something of themselves into it. Unfortunately, there are many students who only do enough to get by, and they don't really make an effort to get what they are learning. Every class has several of this type of student.

This book provides dozens of activities to push students through the three levels of gaining educational independence--raising consciousness, changing attitudes, and transferring roles. I was really impressed by this book and the activities it suggests. I really recommend this not only for language teachers, but for all teachers. There will be something that you can learn from this.
