5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have For Serious ASL Students!
I'll admit that when I purchased this book, I was doing it more for an addition to my library than for actual use. Being a Deaf American Sign Language teacher, I'd often used several other basic ASL books and thought them sufficient, to a point. However, when I got my hands on this book, I was thrilled with the extra mile the writers and illustrators went when producing...

3.0 out of 5 stars Pros and Cons
I used this text for my ASL 1 and ASL 2 courses in college, and I think this text was better organized compared to some other texts for learning sign. However, some of the pictures are a bit difficult to decifer and some of the signs are repeated throughout the text. I would like to see the video and the text as a package deal for fifty one dollars, perhaps that...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have For Serious ASL Students!, August 31, 2003
I'll admit that when I purchased this book, I was doing it more for an addition to my library than for actual use. Being a Deaf American Sign Language teacher, I'd often used several other basic ASL books and thought them sufficient, to a point. However, when I got my hands on this book, I was thrilled with the extra mile the writers and illustrators went when producing it.

This book is similar to "A Basic Course in ASL," and some may find it hard to dicern between the two. However, this book has many more practice sentences and conversation. Many more opportunities to use your new-found skills. Many more illustrations. There is use of slang and idiomatic language that isn't found often in other resources.

You can purchase a videotape to accompany this book. If you are learning on your own, that really is a must-have. Otherwise, this book offers a full course in beginning your trip to understanding true American Sign Language (versus Signed English or Contact Sign). Highly recommended by this deafie! :v)

3.0 out of 5 stars Lots of Vocab...too bad most of it is localized, January 6, 2003

"natalie74" (Arlington, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This was a text I used in Beginning ASL II. There is a supplemental video that goes along with the book as well.

While there is tons of vocabulary used in this text, most of it is used the the Pacific Northwest area. This is not a great book if you're taking classes in the midwest or even the south. I was really glad that I had a professor that could show me local signs in my State/City/neighborhood.

There is some examples of ASL grammar included, but nothing hard and fast. As I've learned, the grammar has been easier to pick up.

The video I mentioned is very helpful since most of the exercises revolve around certain scenes that are acted out. There are some werid camera angles during a few black and white "intermissions".

3.0 out of 5 stars Well organized but really bad pictures, February 2, 1999
By A Customer
We used this book as a manuel for my ASL1 and ASL2 class. It was well organized but the pictures are bad and hard to understand. It is not worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for people who want to learn ASL for fun, March 4, 1999
By A Customer
This book may have poor pictures. It is not designed for self-taught or self-help for learning ASL because it is more like a 3-D language. It must accompany with an qualified teacher who can demonstrate in a class. It is highly recommended for those who do not plan to major in linguistics or interpreting. It is student-friendly materials for fun learning and appreciate the language of ASL. It also has a videotape that will reinforce the drills learned in each unit

This review is from: Learning American Sign Language DVD to accompany Learning American Sign Language - Levels 1 & 2 Beginning and Intermediate, 2nd Edition (DVD)
I bought this DVD to go with the book for my sign language class, because I wanted all the extra help I could get outside of the classroom as well. I figured the DVD would show how to do the vocabulary words that are in the book, but it doesn't, and if you're home and don't remember how to do the sign the book doesn't explain how to do it like some of the other books do. I didn't have a choice about the book I had to buy it for my class, but I did have a choice about the DVD and if you have a choice I honestly wouldn't bother getting it, because you won't get anything extra out of it.

Speak Mandarin Chinese For Beginners The Michel Thomas Method (8-CD Beginner's Program) (Michel Thomas Series)Michel Thomas Method Speak Mandarin Chinese Advanced (Michel Thomas Series)Michel Thomas Method: Mandarin Chinese Vocabulary Course (Michel Thomas Series)

I am the author of the Michel Thomas series of CDs to learn spoken Mandarin Chinese.

This is a very helpful DVD if you know how to use it.

I learned by trial and error so I will share what I learned and hopefully you will benefit from my experience.

This DVD does not include everything in the accompanying book. The only things you will find on it are those parts of the text with the closed caption sign next to them.

The actors are professional, the signing at the speed of deaf signers, the camera work is excellent and very clear.

My suggestion is to go through all the related material on your own and, hopefully ,with a study partner ( not essential but helpful) and only then look at the DVD.

Stop the player whenever necessary (I watch on my Mac) and review any part where you really don't follow what the actors are communicating.

This is a wonderful DVD if you understand its strengths and weaknesses.

It will not teach you ASL. It will give you practice in seeing the signs in action and at the speed deaf signers use. At first this may appear overwhelming. Welcome to the club. It is overwhelming if you don't follow it. So work with the text, review the exercises in the text on your own, and then, finally, use the DVD as a nice dessert to give you feedback on what you have learned and need to review.

Be very eager to make mistakes!! This will give you feedback and help you to become even more comfortable with communicating in ASL.

See my other review of the text if you want more information on this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great condition, some miscommunication?, January 28, 2008
I purchased this to use for my American Sign Language 101 class. My professor is deaf and shows us the signs in the book, which often differ, and says its not really a good tool for learning the signs themselves but it is what is out there. The book does well with putting the words together and showing how sentence structure is. The signs are just a bit different.(but the book isn't a living moving being :)) I received this book very fast even in Alaska, and it was in great condition.
