Book Description

053434691X 978-0534346911 August 3, 1998 4th
This text shows students how the psychology of learning can offer insight into their own behaviour. The book has been extensively revised and updated with new examples, pedagogical features, definitions, and more. At the same time, Chance maintains the strengths that gave previous editions such wide appeal: a simple writing style; high-interest material; numerous applications and examples; humour; queries that help students monitor their comprehension; review questions that stimulate thought and discussion; an emphasis on key concepts; and a strong natural-science approach to behaviour.

5.0 out of 5 stars great textbook for learning and behavior, June 26, 2009

This review is from: Learning and Behavior (Hardcover)
i felt this text was really well written and talks about learning and behavior in an easy to understand format. in fact i think they took how people learn into account when they were writing it, because it is so readable and makes the concepts easy to remember and relate to. i read it in its entirety even though it wasn't required for a class or anything. frankly i remember a few classes i had on behavior and learning that i wish i HAD read it for when i was going to school!

5.0 out of 5 stars text book, January 12, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
So far, I am very pleased with this book. I find it extremely helpful to the questions at the end of each chapter. In addition, I have not had this book for that long, however, what I have read of the textbook I learned a great deal of new information.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good life knowledge, December 25, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Learning and Behavior (Hardcover)
Pros: amazing knowledge. Covers tons of learning theory and summarizes countless experiments in learning psychology over the last two hundred years. Plenty of applications to real-life situations that can improve us and our interactions with others.

Cons: Occasionally lacks scientific soundness. Some of the conclusions derived are from samples that are far too small (case studies, anecdotal evidence from multiple people, samples of only 4-5 people for example), and should not be a base for further conjecture. Others are poor comparisons, e.g. one study in 1974 of 10 students showed x, but a 1978 study of 12 students showed little or no x. The author therefore says "evidence is mixed". In reality, the author should be looking at a far greater accumulation of evidence and have a more sound understanding of statistics.

Overall: Excellent, excellent book. Just be on the lookout for maybe the 10% of the evidence that is not derived well enough.
