2.0 out of 5 stars For biblical newbies only
When I first got interested in reading the Bible as a young adolescent, a version of the New Testament called "Good News for Modern Man" was my bread-and-butter. It was put out by the American Bible Society, the same group who later came up with the Contemporary English Version (CEV), the translation used here. While "Good News" at least drew me in and...

Written in plain English just about anyone can understand, this Bible seems to have many informational notes not found in other Bibles. Because it is so easy to read, this make for a good Bible for elementary level Sunday School teachers. Teachers can have their students read and discuss scripture without having to do on the spot translations.

But this Bible is not just for youngsters. Adults can gain new insight into Biblical lessons in ways that other Bibles fail to deliver. There are many "mini articles" that provide unique perspective and there are introductions to each book that helps place it in proper context. It is interesting to note that Barabbas is described as a well known "terrorist" as if to add new emphasis on his release from condemnation. The side notes and cross references are also very useful.

All of these many components make this Bible a valuable resource for anyone interested in learning Christian scripture.

I just purchased this bible in paperback and haven't been able to put it down! The full-color pages are filled with drawings, pictures, artwork, explanations, thought-provoking questions, key bible verses, etc., etc., etc. This is a MUST HAVE for every Christian...young, old, new or seasoned. Wish I could give it more stars!

The Learning Bible has more information than you will find in most other study Bibles. It's a joy to discover all the details from the history of the Bible specifics about archeology in an easy to read format. I was especially impressed with the art from all over the world which gives this book a special, international flavor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, I love this Bible., August 1, 2005
This review is from: The Learning Bible: Contemporary English Version (Hardcover)
I got the bible from a christian bookstore on Febuary 24, 2005.
I was blessed when I got it. It has lot's of info - it's like having a bible & bible encyclopedia at my fingertips. I like the pictures in it also. I even have enough margin room to write my notes in which is cool also. I read it every day, sometimes all
day everyday. It has lot's of Art in it too - I even draw pictures in the side magins that matches with the verses which is cool, and most of all, it's really easy to read and understand it.

Praise the Lord - God is good.

As a child, I attended churches that were very conservative: Any version of the Bible that wasn't the King James Version was viewed very skeptically. Having attended churches in recent years where the text was usually drawn from the New King James Version, I began to realize that updating the translation could add a lot to my understanding. I then read the New King James Version several times and felt like my appreciation for God's purposes was becoming better developed as I understood those purposes better.

I still had lots of questions. What did all of those place names mean? What was a mandrake? Where were all of those places?

I realized that I could learn a lot by reading another translation and having maps and notes to draw on that could help slake my thirst for knowledge of God's Word. I found The Learning Bible and my wife and daughter kindly gave it to me as a Christmas gift last year. Since then, I've been reading five chapters a day and recently completed the book.

This experience was quite a revelation (pun intended) because I learned more things in one reading of the Bible than I had in my many previous Bible readings. Since then, I've moved on to a study of the King James Version, New International Version, New American Standard, and the Amplified Bible. Already in that study, I've had to take out the Learning Bible to find the answers to questions I still had after using my Comparative Study Bible.

I suspect The Learning Bible will always be a standard reference for me. I wish this Bible had been available when I was a youngster.

Although I read it cover-to-cover (a practice I recommend), this Bible is organized to make it easy to use if you are only reading one verse or chapter. Words, concepts, elements of faith, and explanations are cross-referenced so you can easily find the most helpful material from wherever you are.

I especially enjoyed the background articles and mini-articles that draw together learning from throughout the Bible. Some of them are like reading a whole sermon and provide helpful connections among the book's of the Bible.

The notes, illustrations, articles, and maps also break up the long passages of words to give you time and perspective to let God's meaning sink in better.

I humbly suggest that you take a look at this Bible and consider studying it from cover to cover.

May God bless you, your family, and all you do!

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book!, May 27, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Learning Bible: Contemporary English Version (Hardcover)
First of all, let me write that I am a complete Bible newbie. I did a lot of research into different versions before settling on this one and I'm so glad I did. I wanted something that would be easy for me to understand. Even though this CEV version is easy to read, some of the Psalms and Proverbs are still not easy for a bible newbie like myself to comprehend (and I've been to college). I'm following the "Read the Bible in a year" and am actually reading more than a day at a time and then comparing it to other versions I have on my PDA. I bought the NIV Learning Bible also, but I'm glad I started reading the CEV first because to me the NIV is more difficult. Both Bibles are huge (2 1/2" thick) and very heavy (the packages weighed 5 pounds and it was all book) with tissue paper thin pages, but very readable (not really small) print. The articles and pictures in them are so interesting and I learn something new every day. I actually look forward to another day when I can read and learn more. :-)

Awesome! Easy to read...Easy to understand.
The side notes are very helpful, as are the charts and pictures.

4.0 out of 5 stars CEV Learning Bible is great!, February 12, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Learning Bible: Contemporary English Version (Hardcover)
I teach 12 and 13 year-olds and have found I have less explaining of words to do with the CEV than with my previous favorite, the NIV. The side notes are useful for them and the reference to certain maps and other mini-articles is a good learning tool. The pictures are of good quality and their captions enhance the theme. However, I miss an extensive cross-reference and concordance of the NIV study Bible when I prepare for leading an adult's Bible Study. The adult participants are very impressed with the CEV and don't notice the lack of references. And, there is no need for weight-lifting after taking this Bible out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Inviting!, September 20, 2003

The Learning Bible grabs your attention and makes Bible reading an exploration! I love its colourful presentation of the word of God. The side column notes are succinct and interesting. The CEV translation is a little on the simple side but is good for reading large sections of scripture. Adding a concordance would make this volume more accessible. The Learning Bible is great for home use but is too unwieldy to carry to church or Bible studies. Hopefully a slightly smaller edition will be produced in the future without sacrificing on the text size. As it stands, this is an excellent and interesting presentation of the Bible!
