Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 1-3--Although the need for books about values and character building is real, these series titles seem like a marketing ploy. The texts are basic, providing essentially the same or less information found in standard encyclopedias. No sources are listed. The material is simplified sometimes to the point of being misleading. In Douglass, Marlowe states, "The Southern states wanted to keep slavery. They were willing to separate from the Northern states to do it. The Northern states believed that slavery should not be legal. And they were willing to fight to keep the country together. For that reason, in 1861, the Civil War began." No other causes are suggested; no hint is given of mixed feelings on either side. The format, with two-page "chapters" (one page of text plus one illustration), large print, and a glossary, is well suited to reluctant readers or ESL students. If your library is in great need of that type of material, consider this series. Otherwise, titles in David Adler's "Picture Book of..." series (Holiday) present more rounded and informative views of these two influential Americans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learning about bravery from the life of Harriet Tubman, February 17, 2001
This review is from: Learning about Bravery from the Life of Harriet Tubman (Historical Heroes) (Hardcover)
The book was very heart as Harriet went through times of life as a child of slavery. Her experiences in dealing with slavery and living up to expectations, were extordinary. Harriett, is one of great admiration and commendations of a "Woman Of Character". For so many of us do not appreciate the value of what others have went through to get us where we are now. As I've grown in my life time, I have learn to appreciate and admire, the things that our ancestors have done to give us our rights our people. " To Be Treated Equal". This is one experience that everyone must wake up and see to appreciate that "We Are As One."
