4.0 out of 5 stars Fun play rug
We bought this rug for our 17-month old daughter, who is the recipient of many of the toys we wish *we* had. Right now, she's more enamored of having her own play space than she is interested in the neighborhood aspect. But, the rug is quite fun, with houses, a duck pond, zoo, park, school, etc.--all in slightly "off" perspective. The lanes on the streets are the perfect...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for use on carpets, better on hard floor surface
This is a beautiful road rug, but I have carpet throughout my house and in my childs room. The rug seems to move everytime we play or step on it. Since the rug was in my childs room and next to his bed, the rug would crawl next to the bed and it would be curled up and lumpy and squished next to his race car bed, which has no underspace. The bed touches the floor, so,...

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun play rug, October 21, 2003

We bought this rug for our 17-month old daughter, who is the recipient of many of the toys we wish *we* had. Right now, she's more enamored of having her own play space than she is interested in the neighborhood aspect. But, the rug is quite fun, with houses, a duck pond, zoo, park, school, etc.--all in slightly "off" perspective. The lanes on the streets are the perfect size for matchbox-sized cars, for when your little one is older, but toddler-sized cars work just as well.

All in all, I'm very happy with this purchase. It seems a durable, colorful rug. It's long, providing lots of play space. Its no-slip backing should provide safety on tile or wood floors (though we have it on the carpeted floor of our living room). The best aspect? Our daughter keeps her blocks and cars on the rug--instead of everywhere else underfoot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Creative, November 6, 2004
By
This review is from: Learning Carpets Giant Road Carpet (Toy)
I look for toys that inspire creative play and exploration of the world. I want toys that have more than a button to push. I also want toys that are fairly quiet and easy to play with for little kids.

This rug fits all of these requirements. The colors are bright. The rug is very sturdy. My one complaint is that it does not roll up into a very small cylinder thus making it take up some space when it's 'put up'. The small matchbox cars fit perfectly on this rug. However, even the toddler cars that are bigger work fine on the roads. IT is big enough that two kids can play with it at the same time without running into each other too often. IT is longer than it is wide. Young arms can reach across the whole rug while pushing a car.

Excellent choice.
Well worth the money.
Enjoy.

I bought this for my 6 year old son and he loves playing with it. He had another car play mat that I bought for him years ago and it was maybe 3x5 feet. He out grew it so I got him this one. What I really like about it is that it is narrow and long. He doesn't have to step over or reach too far across to get to the other side as he would have to if the mat's diameter was too large. Is nice when 2 kids are playing--they have plenty of space wothout knocking into eachother or climbing over eachother.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than I expected and a big hit with our 5 year old., September 29, 2008

Our 5 year old just received this for his birthday and he wants nothing more than to play with it nonstop. He has used both his Pixar Cars diecast cars as well as his Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars on it. Although the Pixar character cars don't fit exactly within the lanes this doesn't bother him at all.

As picky parents, his dad and I thought the graphics could have been a bit better--there are a couple of places where one lane of the two land road narrows noticeably and it too narrow even for a Hot Wheel to not go over the center line. We also thought the actual road layout was a bit dodgey and could have been thought out better. Details like this don't detract from the play value, but they don't enhance the educational value.

On a positive note, I will say that this rug exceeded my expectations in two areas. First, the carpet is soft and supple. I was very pleased that it rolled out and stayed flat instead of suffering from carpet curl at the ends as I feared it would and like so many cheap and stiff runner carpets will. It is a runner size, long and narrow and our five year old can unroll it and lay it out by himself (a real plus!). Second, I expected that the carpet would smell, I have had unpleasant experiences in the past with chemical odors eminating from the backing material of carpets. There was none of that here. The carpet was absolutely benign in this regard straight out of the wrap. What a relief.

It is hard to say how durable the carpet will be, but it certainly seems sturdy. If we can keep the cat off of it and dirty shoes it should stay nice for a long time.

Overall, I am very happy with this carpet and with how much our son seems to be enjoying it.

The bed touches the floor, so, the carpet has no place to go but be crumpled up next to the bed. Pitty. So, I'm constantly straightening up the rug to play with it. It's hard when he's standing on the rug. hahaha. But instead, I took the rug to Nana's house and she has a much lower carpet... not the shaggy type of carpet we have, and they play with it in the livingroom. The rug is light enough to roll up and put away, so, not much of a problem there.

This map looked cute on the site, and when it arrived I was thrilled. It has fun "chunky" graphics and I like the long rectangular shape. My boyfriend was pleased that we found a non-pastel baby gift that had cars AND an airstrip. Recommended.

i thought that it would be wider for some reason but the length is good. its about 2 feet wide by 5 feet long i think. my 3 yr old loves to drive his cars on it. it keeps him entertained. it did however come in a box, some of the other reviews said that it didn't, but mine did.

I ordered this item for my grandson for Christmas. I haven't opened it yet, but it appears to be of GREAT quality. My only concern is that if you too order it for Christmas, BEWARE. It didn't come with any wrapping, just clear packaging that shows what the product is and a shipping label. Luckily, Andrew lives 1200 miles away and the surprise was not be spoiled.

My 2-year-old grandson had cars and played with them. He would put Weebles in them whether they fit in or not. However, "car time" was short and erratic, and had to share his interest with several other toys. With the Giant Road Carpet, his car playing got serious. While he's moving the cars along the roads, he pays no attention to anything else. You can almost see the wheels of his brain continually turning, inventing new scenarios that he has to play out with just the right vehicles. This toy has truly sparked his imagination.
