About the Author

William G. Spady has been a major catalyst and leader of educational change efforts in North America and abroad for over forty years. His vision of and commitment to elevating and transforming our entrenched Industrial Age paradigm of education is boldly stated in his seven books and countless published papers. Charles J. Schwahn has been a serious student of leadership theory and practice for all of his professional career. In addition to his successful tenure as a school superintendent, he has consulted with organizations throughout North America for more than thirty years on the topics of leadership, change, future-focusing, and strategic design.

Format: Paperback
Learning Communities 2.0 is an enlightening book describing "the grand illusion" of what we as educators and society consider "education" to be in this country. As Spady and Schwahn tell us, this "grand illusion...fully embodies a closed-system paradigm" in education they refer to as "Educentrism". As the product of the Industrial-Age and hallmark of our current system, Spady and Schwahn consider "Educentrism" as "Education in a Box". Educentrism serves Industrial-Age assembly line mentality, operation, policies and purpose, and no longer serves our diverse group of learners in today's "Age of Empowerment". Spady and Schwahn's work represents a practical and necessary paradigm shift from Education in a Box to what they refer to as "Empowering Learning Communities" (ELC). Creating an Empowering Learning Community requires a collegial culture of professionalism and a transformational mindset where teachers, administrators, parents and students are all involved in the life-performance learner outcomes of the student. ELCs not only promote a learner centered paradigm, but have at its core the individual needs, talents and skills that each learner possesses. Not only is Learning Communities 2.0 a must read for today's future-focused administrators and teachers, but it also should be required reading for school board members, state representatives and any politicians who control and effect educational policy at the local, state and federal levels in this country.

This book by Schwahn and Spady offers an exceptional alternative to Americas system of mass produced education. Their research is incredibly sound and their experiences are expressed throughout the pages. This book should be read in conjunction with "Total Leaders 2.0" which is an updated version of Schwahn and Spady's previous work on leadership. I highly recommend this book for anyone in the educational field as well as parents who want their kids to have a successful educational experience.
