4.0 out of 5 stars Good but can't play it more than, say, once or twice a year, August 13, 2004
This was a really fun game, especially the first time I played it. But each successive time you play it, it gets less and less fun. The adventure is exactly the same each time, even though you pick your guide and all that. You meet the same people, you go to the same places. Also I never observed this with the Oregon Trail games...
Now the interesting thing is this. I wouldn't have said that about the original Amazon Trail game. The original IS still fun time after time, even though you meet the same people over and over again. I think perhaps the reason for this is in the 3rd, there's so much dialogue between you and the characters you meet, that you're more apt to be like, "Oh yeah, I remember hearing this the last time I played." In the other one, you only converse briefly with the people you meet. But wouldn't you think more dialogue and better animation would make for a better game? It's a difficult issue and makes this game difficult to rate.
But I really like taking pictures of all the animals in the rainforest! The only frustrating thing is, each time I play, I can find almost all the animals except the same ones! I have never found the Goliath Bird-Eating Spider. Yet some of the animals are everywhere you look.
But it's a fun game. And you CAN play it a few times a year and it is fun each time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great children's game, February 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Amazon Trail 3.0 (CD-ROM)
I remember growing up playing games like "The Amazon Trail 3rd Edition." The first time I got it was from a cereal box.

I installed it on my computer, expecting a very lame educational game, but I was presented with an adventure of epic proportions. As a kid, this was the coolest thing I had ever played at the time. Even as an adult, I purchased a copy of the CD and spent hours playing through it. It was more of a nostalgic feel than anything, but nonetheless, it was a great buy.

There are some glitches and "cheats" that I've learned from playing it. Like, how you can get an infinite supply of food, go backwards in the game, etc.

If you love adventure games, learning, nostalgia, or just want to get your kids to learn something, pick up a copy of this game.
