Book Description

Based on Windows, Learning Computers, Speaking English is designed to be used with any version of Microsoft Word. It can be used as the entire curriculum for a class, as supplementary material for just a portion of class time, or as a guide to self-study. It can be used in classrooms where there are very few computers or in classrooms that offer a computer to each student.
Learning Computers, Speaking English gives ESL students greater options and opportunities in today's technology-based economy by helping them practice English as they learn about computers and word processing.
The book develops skills cumulatively. Students are led through cooperative computer-based activities that cover the basic concepts of word processing, from learning to use the mouse to the features of Windows 95. Through these interactive activities, students also concentrate on reading, writing, listening, and speaking, as well as grammar. Eventually, students will both improve their English and master basic word processing, helping them to feel more confident when using the computer for important tasks ranging from looking for a skilled job to helping their children with their homework.
The accompanying disk contains instructional files that allow students to save their work to a disk.

Comments educators have made about the book:

"A book I highly recommend is 'Learning Computers, Speaking English,' by Steve Quann and Diana Satin. It was extremely reasonable and came with a disk. It has easy to use lessons that combine word processing functions and learning English."

"I think the book hits a rather untouched niche in the ESL world (I've already referred several clients to it as they've been in search of an ESL/computer-related program) and commend you on your work!"
Jamie Cross
Editor, Alta Books

"The structure of the each unit is very systematic, as it brings smooothly together both the computer objectives and the language objectives...As a book for "cooperative activities," it offers numerous suggestions and prompts to help learners interact with peers and have hands-on computer experience."

Francis Britto Ph.D.
Sohia University, Japan

"It's a great resource for connecting ESOL and technology skills! Thank you for creating it."
