Editorial Reviews

From the Author

My prayer is that this collection of short stories can be utilized as a tool for singles of any dating age--to encourage them to read and learn from the various dating scenarios highlighted within the book. I want readers to readily see the mistakes made during the dating scenarios and what pitfalls they may want to avoid. This book is best used by anyone wanting to date the way God desires--for those in singles' classes or ministries, book clubs or for personal study. The ultimate goal is to give those singles that are seriously looking for someone to date the tools to eventually turn a dating relationship into a life-time commitment.

Teena Richardson was born in Saginaw, Michigan. She started speaking and writing about single issues when she noticed many individuals from church were struggling with the dating process. She has been a writer and Christian for over twenty-five years and now resides in Orlando, Florida, with her husband and two daughters.

I bought a digital copy of this book at a Christian singles conference, where I briefly met the author. In this book, the author gives dating scenarios and advice from a biblical perspective. In the book, the author addresses topics ranging from appropriate dress, cohabitation, bitterness, sexual immorality, focusing on the outward instead of inward, and many other topics. Some of the stories are exaggerated a bit, but the author states that this will be the case, and explains the rationale for it, in the Introduction.

Each chapter follows the same format:
Story/scenario,
Biblical Overview (frames the story from a biblical perspective),
Dating Mistakes with Biblical Principles (lists mistakes related to the story with description, biblical application, and related scripture), and
Story Conclusion.

This book can be used as a personal study or for group study. I read the book alone. If this is a topic that is of interest, then it would be useful to keep a reflection journal and/or prayer journal while reading it. I think that this book would be more useful when there are others to discuss it, either in a book club or class group. This book will likely be one that readers will want to keep on the shelf for as a reference book, as the information covered is timeless.

The scenarios in the book really make you think. We all know people that have been in similar situations, or we have been in these situations ourselves. The included Scriptures help remind readers of how we are expected to behave when dating. This book is a great read and a must read for people who are truly interested in dating God's way. I also recommend this for parent's, friends, and family members who want to help loved ones navigate dating waters.

I ran across this book on FB or Twitter and immediately the title caught my attention. I saw the words "Dating" and "Mistakes" and knew this was something I needed to read. Wasn't sure what I expected when I first started to read it, but I was impressed off the bat. Learning To Date From Other People's Mistakes is not a how-to book, which was one of the things I loved about it. It is a book of dating stories that really make you question some of your dating choices. I also loved that it's a Christian book that wasn't afraid to discussed the relevant issues in today's dating society. Each chapter gives a dating story, biblical overview, dating mistakes with scriptural references and a conclusion. Many of the stories I just had to be nosey and skip to the conclusion to find out what happened. Excellent book and I would recommend it to others.
