Book Description

July 2002
(Taken From Back Cover of Book) Forty percent of American students are reading below grade level. Two out of ten students are learning disabled (dyslexic). For years educator, in search of the right reading approach for all children, have switched from a sight approach, to a phonetic approach, to linguistic, to whole language, and now, also to an integrated approach. Yet, none have proved to be completely effective. Author, Addie Cusimano, has solved the dilemma by composing an approach that works with all students, learning disabled and those who are not learning disabled. Her program has been used with consistent success at a private learning center that she operated for many years.

Addie Cusimano presents her secrets for success in this book. She discusses many overlooked facets of learning, thinking, writing, studying, and reading skill development, and offers solutions for educators, parents and other professionals who work with students. Her preface is that learning disabled students can and should be cured at an elementary level, and that the best reading approach is one that would incorporate many more facets of learning than are presently taught.

Ms. Cusimano's book, based on her many years of experience and success with the diagnosis and remediation of students with learning disabilities, offers a refreshing and assured method for the solution of America's academic woes.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

This book is a real find! It sheds new light on the subject of education and learning disabilities (dyslexia), and is a book that parents, educators (pre-school through college), and physicians who work with students with learning problems will want to read.

From the Author

I wrote this book for the sole purpose of presenting my research. I know that if my findings were to be implemented in a basal reading program, we would see tremendous improvement in the reading and learning levels of all students, and a cure for children with learning disabilities.

More About the Author

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

I am an educational therapist who has been active in the field of education for more than thirty-five years. I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education with psychology as a concentration and a Master of Science degree in Education with reading as a concentration. I hold permanent New York and Pennsylvania State reading specialist and common branch subject teaching certificates. I have worked as a classroom teacher and reading specialist for New York State public schools and was director, diagnostician, clinician and teacher for a learning center in upstate New York for seventeen years. My educational experience has involved concentrated work in remedial, developmental and enrichment areas for preschool through college level students.

In addition, I have taken supplementary graduate courses in the field of learning disabilities and has done extensive independent research related to students with learning disabilities. My book, Learning Disabilities: There is a Cure, is based on my findings and research on the development of learning skills. It has been recognized internationally. I have also designed and published a teaching program for the development of visual memory of words, entitled Achieve: A Visual Memory Program that develops visual memory for students in grades 1-8. In addition,I have designed three workbooks, entitled Auditory Sequential Memory Workbook, for the development of auditory memory of numbers, letters and words,Visual Discrimination: Noting Differences in Frequently Misperceived Words to help beginning readers and students with visual discimination weaknesses and Auditory Memory in Context Instructional Workbook for the development of attention, listening, processing and recall of sentences and paragraphs. My teaching materials have proven to be highly successful in the development of essential learning skills. In addition, I was named to Marquis Who's Who in American Education 1994/2007.

A second edition of Learning Disabilities: There is a Cure ISBN 9780972776271 has now been published. It is a revised edition with two new chapters; one entitled, Learning a Foreign Language and another entitled, The Best Mathematics Approach. In addition, there is an update on reading with information on how we, as educators, can drastically reduce the high school drop out rate.

This book is valuable for educators and parents who work with students, from learning disabled to those who are not what we would classify as learning disabled. For instance, the chapter on learning a foreign language is full of information on how to study a foreign language, techniques that are quite different from studying, for example, history or science.

All of the work that I have done in writing the two editions of Learning Disabilities: There is a Cure and the workbooks has been done with one thought in mind, and that is, helping students to reach their full potential. Each workbook was based on techniques that I found proved to be very successful in remediating learning disabled students and were designed out of a real need for teaching materials that teach these specific learning skills.

The title of my review really says it all. This book gives hope and guidance. It is written by a real expert but she doesn't use a bunch of technical words. The book is a joy to read because of how she presents it and because of the information in it. You will find things you can do right now to help your child. You don't need to go out and buy expensive special programs. Just read her book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A book all parents should read, August 29, 2002
This review is from: Learning Disabilities: There is a Cure--A Guide for Parents, Educators and Physicians, 1st Edition (Paperback)
I am a parent of a 9 year old child (3rd grader) who has had trouble in school since kindergarten. We have struggled to understand why such a bright child was having so much difficulty in school. This book helped us understand that the problem was that she was deficient in specific learning skills that could be developed with proper instruction. We didn't even realize these skills were involved in learning. It also offered suggestions as to what we could do, as parents, to help her develop these skills. It has given us the information we need to knowledgably discuss our concerns with her teachers.
