5.0 out of 5 stars Great investment for the beginner.
I wish I had this book when I was learning LaTeX! It is a concise beginner's guide that will get the reader up to speed in a short amount of time. The book does a nice job of briefly introducing more advanced topics, and where to go for more information. This book will get you 80% where you want to go, and I would recommend it as the best book for any new LaTeX user. As a...

3.0 out of 5 stars A brief introduction to Latex
The text have several examples and it is very clear. It is a good book to begin to learn latex but no more. When one get more experience writing latex, the book has only de basic commandas and a bit more. Search over the internet for more material is a good advise.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best first LaTeX book, October 17, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Learning LaTeX (Paperback)
This amazing little book is the best introduction to LaTeX (version 2e). It is hard to believe how much useful information it contains; it shows you how to incopporate pictures, create indices, tables of contents, math typesetting, etc. The style is wonderful and witty. The left half of each page shows you what LaTeX commands produce the output on the right half. I've been using LaTeX for a while without really reading any book cover to cover, big mistake and many frustrations.
My best recipe for learning LaTeX is: Start with this book, read it cover to cover, practice it, then move to Kopka and Daly's book.

This is the perfect book if you simply don't have the time to learn LaTeX properly. At ca. 60 pages, you can get through the volume in an afternoon. It's a painless way to learn to produce beautiful documents.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, October 7, 1999
By A Customer

This book, geared for the absolute LaTeX beginner, will have anyone up and running in no time. In many ways it is very similar to Gratzer's small book only shorter and without the discussion of AMSLaTeX. Some of the organizational choices made by the authors, however, are quite puzzling. It's not until the middle of the book that they discuss quotation marks and dashes. That material should have been in the second chapter, though in a book this small--80 or so pages which could be profitably studied for two or three days--I suppose that does not matter much. If you've ever wanted to begin the daunting task of mastering LaTeX, this book along with Gratzer's and Diller's will make you impressively adept in no time.

I have tried reading a lot of online articles about learning Latex, and none of them was very helpful. After reading this book for 1 hour, I started creating my own document (which had a pressing deadline). Do buy this book if you are beginner in Latex: the treatment is lucid, helpful and easy-to-read. 95% needs of 90% Latex users will be served by the commands given in this small 60 page book. If you have more advanced needs, this book gives excellent referencs to other, more reference-like Latex books. Oh, and if you are a Windows user, I'd strongly recomment (MikTeX + TeXnicCenter) as your Latex software.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good, November 25, 2005

Although some may consider this book to be awfully expensive for the few pages that it has, it is indeed worth the price.

The format of the presented information in this book is very well done. The LaTeX code is given on the left of the page and the rendering of the code is given on the right. This allows the reader to see the actual results yielded by the examples rather than only seeing the code. After all, how meaningful would it be to see LaTeX code and not know exactly what the actual rendering of it looks like?

Most features of LaTeX which I have needed for small documents and reports can be found in this book. There is also a nice sample report in the book which can be used as a template.

Finally, the book is not the least bit boring to read. The author has a sense of humor and gives interesting examples to illustrate various features of LaTeX.

In summary, this book is well worth its price. I hesitated to buy it at first because I thought the shortness of the book would result in the exclusion of important features. However, for my purposes, the book does a very good job of covering what is needed for short mathematical articles and reports.

This is a very good book for beginners of LaTeX. I strongly recommend it.

This book helped provide me with a solid base in utilizing LaTeX. I was pleased with how simple it was to produce a professional document with LaTeX and the guidance of this book. Never will I need or use MS Word again.
