A special ed teacher's #1 pick!,
By Sara (Mesa, AZ United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Li'L Pick Me Up! Fun Songs for Learning Signs (ASL) Baby Sign Language (Enhanced CD with both Printed and Downloadable eBook) (Spiral-bound)
I am a special education teacher and just finished my Masters degree in special education, learning disabilities. I have seen a variety of materials and resources out there to assist students with special needs. I find that techniques and methods used for my students also benefit the non-disabled students. However it is not enough to buy the latest crazed method or item. To truly benefit children, it must be research based with evidence of it's effectiveness.Let me tell you, this book is amazing! The thing I like the most is that research backs up teaching young children sign language. There have been numerous studies published in prestigous journals that provide evidence that children who are delayed in language can improve their oral language by learning nonverbal communication systems (www.asha.org, 2004). This can only benefit children who acquire language at a normal rate. I started teaching my baby girl sign language at 8 months. Little did I know that at 2 years old, she would be delayed in her language ability. She uses her signs to express what she wants along with her words. I wish I had this book back then! The signs are fun, functional and occur in everyday life. The music is outstanding..you hear a WIDE variety... from calypso, country to even an elvis type singer. The songs make you want to get up and move. They teach children how to communciate their needs in a fun way...how to ask for more food, types of foods, types of animals, getting hurt, body parts, transportation and asking for a diaper change! Some of the songs are really funny..like the elvis one. You won't get burnt out on this one...it has 20 different songs! The book provides the lyrics and examples of the signs used in the songs. It's really easy to follow and understand, even if you have no background in sign language. I would HIGHLY recommend this book/CD to every family. You never know, your child might really need it later down the line if you find them delayed in their language. Enjoy!!

Really good ASL explanations,

You can pop the CD into your computer and watch a video of one of the songs being signed, as well as tips on working with children. The pictures look like they were rendered in Poser, so they are more clear than many books with photos or drawn images. A few signs have could be confusing due to a lack of explanation to go with the picture, however. It had good information about ASL classifiers, which was a delightful and unexpected bonus. The music CD was like listening to bad knockoffs of good songs, but after you listen to them long enough, you get used to it.

Okay, but not as good as it seemed to be,

I liked the concept for this product, but I'm kind of disappointed by the sound of the songs. It seems like they tried to make the songs clever, but for my one year old, they just don't interest him. They are not catchy enough, I think. Listening to the songs and looking at the book have helped me practice different signs, but the songs are fast and even I have had a difficult time staying with the music. I can't imagine my one year getting it anytime soon.

Amazing for Parents and Kids,

The music on this CD is well worth the price whether you sign with your kids or not. When I put the CD in, my 20-month old son's ears perked up. Since the first time we listened, I find him singing the songs to himself. He will stand alone and sing a few words from "More Milk" or the "Oowww" song (he still is kind of monotone so it sounds really cute). The first time he sang "More Milk," I thought he was hungry. He also loves the "Go to the Zoo" song. But if you do sign with kids, the CD adds a second dimension that is amazing. My son has been signing for about 10 months. Even though he talks more than signs now, he has enjoyed learning some new signs and using the old ones he know along with new songs. The Activity Guide is amazing and guides you through how to sign the songs. The songs also have funny lines for parents so you'll be laughing as you all dance. One of the songs about changing diapers has funny commentary in the background. This is one of the best purchases I made for both me and my son.

I just got this and am listining to it as I write! The songs on this are wonderful! They are original and not a repetition of the classic childrens songs which is refreshing! It has managed to entertain all of my children 2, 3.5 and 5 years old. The illustrations in the book are easy to follow and supplement the Sign With Your Baby learning kit wonderfully! I thought it was to expensive at first but had used Sign with Your Baby so I wanted to at least try it and the book quality alone is worth the money. I am very impressed with the over all quality of both the songs and the book.

I have been signing with my daughter for 3 years now, since she was 6 months old. Signing along with songs has always been a favorite activity of ours and has helped us both to learn and remember hundreds of signs. The 'PICK ME UP' CD and Acitivty guide are an answer to a prayer!!!! Even if it had no signing or activity guide it would still be worth it's wait in gold for the fantastic children's music. WITH the signing activities it is just priceless! My daughter talks our ears off now, so no longer needs to use signs to communicate with us, but she LOVES to dance her little butt off as she signs along with this CD. By the way-- this music has children's lyrics but does not sound like sappy childrens music. It won't drive you crazy after you hear it several hundred times in the car (as you steer with your forhead while signing).Way to go Sign with your Baby!!!

I bought this somewhat hesitantly, knowing I wanted the material, but not entirely sure I would be able to stand the songs being sung. I was pleased with the quality of the music. It is fun for kids and doesn't make me want to run from the room with my hands over my ears like some children's music does. The guide is comprehensive and tells you how to use the signs depending on the child's age. If you want to teach your baby asl, then you must have this CD! :)

Gabby (22 months) can not take a car ride without it! She dances with her hands, as we call it! She has picked up so many songs and words and uses them in the real world as well. Highly interactive and fun to dance and sing to in the house as well. She is so entertaining to watch when listening to the up beat and diverse tune selections. Everything from the "Beach Boys" to folk music... It gives a little to all.

This is some of the absolute BEST children's music you will have the opportunity to hear! My 2-year-old daughter loves to sing and sign along to these fun, upbeat, and sometimes hilarious songs. The music stands on its own as a very well-produced CD, and with the addition of the wonderful activity guide, the complete package is an incredibly unique gift to give your family. You won't be disappointed!

How priviledged we feel to have found this CD/book set! Our 16 month old LOVES the music. The songs are exciting, uplifting, and are incredibly contagious to the listener. I find myself replaying track 12 (the Zoo song) over and over and over again! As our child is being raised in a bilingual home, the signs that she is learning has been an incredible asset to her! The more signs she is learning, the less frustrated she and we become. I play the CD ALL the time in the car. Our daughter just jumps out of her seat as she signs to all the new familiar tunes and watches me sign with one hand to her (and one hand on the wheel!). I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS for your children or as a great gift idea! |
