5.0 out of 5 stars best book for women thinking about divorce
This was the best of several books about divorce that I read prior to taking that big step. The author takes you chronologically thru the process: the years you wish your spouse would just sort of disappear (or worse), the doubts about whether you should try to hold things together, the time you first say to yourself the "D-word." Then there are so many...

1.0 out of 5 stars New Title
As a victim of divorce and reviewer of this book, I believe a better title would be "Learning to Deceive".

5.0 out of 5 stars best book for women thinking about divorce, June 4, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Learning to Leave: A Women's Guide (Paperback)
This was the best of several books about divorce that I read prior to taking that big step. The author takes you chronologically thru the process: the years you wish your spouse would just sort of disappear (or worse), the doubts about whether you should try to hold things together, the time you first say to yourself the "D-word." Then there are so many practical things (like getting a rental mailbox so you can carry on correspondence without it going to your house), and not telling your husband until you are ready (you have copies of all your financial documents, you've had any dental work or surgery you may be needing, you've bought clothes to interview for a job in if necessary)...Later chapters deal with male rage, children and visitation, and legal matters. Finally, there's the relief and starting your new life. I've passed this book on to several women friends, with great feedback.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book saved my life!, August 21, 2001

This review is from: Learning to Leave: A Women's Guide (Paperback)
I bought this book many years ago, when my kids where 4 and 8, I was able to plan, save, and leave a man without incidence who was abusive and threatning. I was able to leave in safety with my childen using my head and not my heart. My sons are now 17 and 21 and very happy and healthy. Since I left, I have received my Bachelors and Masters Degree and own a very successful consulting firm. I got out before my boys turned into men like their father. Thank You Lynette!

5.0 out of 5 stars All I needed to make a plan and work it!, November 1, 1999

I read this book a long time ago when I needed help on making my decision to leave my alcoholic husband. By reading it over and over when my resolve would weaken, I was able to go forward to a much, much better life and future. A great book to help work past the defeating behaviors that keep us locked into the victim stance.

5.0 out of 5 stars This literally SAVED MY LIFE, June 5, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Learning to Leave: A Women's Guide (Paperback)
While in a 10-year physically abusive marriage, I hid this book, reading it at any safe opportunity I had. It helped me clarify my thoughts, realize my needs, not to mention realizing that fact that I actually had needs AND DESIRES! Reclaim your life and read this book - even if you have to keep it at work or at a friends house. By the time I moved out (literally, ran away one morning), I realized that I had been secretly preparing my escape for a long time. Learning to Leave teaches you to prepare emotionally and financially. I was extremely surprised at how easy the whole process was, and a HUGE part of it is due to reading Learning to Leave. - THANK YOU Lynette Triere!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars It Gave Me the Strength To Save My Sanity, February 7, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Learning to Leave: A Women's Guide (Paperback)
I first read this very straight forward, helpful book more than seventeen years ago, when I knew I had to leave my marriage in order to save my sanity and be an effective parent to my children, ages 17 and 13. The information contained in Learning To Leave, finally gave me the courage to do what was necessary to end the emotional abuse we lived with on a daily basis. This book was my guide, my strength, my power, when I felt very weak and afraid. Even after my divorce, it's messages have remained with me and enriched other areas of my life. This book is a must for anyone contemplating leaving a relationship. Read it, even if you have to do so under cover. It just may save your life!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hope for those who might not be able to see any way out., August 26, 2004

This review is from: Learning to Leave: A Women's Guide (Paperback)
I am statistic. I was an abused wife, and for a woman who lives in an abusive marriage, her life can more or less become "hell". Alot of times women put up with the situation because they do not know what their choices are, they do not know how to ask for help, or where to go to find answers. The author has laid it out in concrete ways to get women to think along the lines of their own safety and security.

This book is one that I have read and used and have bought countless times for other women who were desperately in need of getting free of a very bad marriage. I will continue to give this book to friends and family because I do believe that it is the finest I have read.

This book was recommended to me by a wonderful woman who gave me some sound advice and I am grateful to her for it. I found the information in the book very helpful and it made me really think about divorce in a new way. I learned that I no longer have to feel guilty about wanting a stable life for my kids and myself and that I shouldn't be afraid to take charge and make a change in my life.

I have bought this book for several friends after it helped me with my separation. It talks about the emotions you go through when separating/divorcing and it's like the book is in your head reading your mind. I highly recommend this book to anyone going through this time in their life.

Some books never grow old. The practical wisdom in Learning To Leave is at the same time realistic, gentle. and hard-nosed. A must-read for any woman in a bad situation.
