Offers loads of useful information for "gamelet" programmers,
By A Customer
This review is from: Learning Lingo: The Art and Science of Programming with Macromedia(R) Director(R) (Paperback)
I passed this book up several times in the store becuase it was written for Director 4 - big mistake! It's easy to update the code for Director 7, or use it as it is (I personally prefer the new D7 "sprite(1).visible" = TRUE to "set the visible of sprite 1 to TRUE" from D6 and earlier). I finally ordered it based on other online comments, and I only wish I had picked it up sooner. It covers many game-specific subjects that I haven't found in other books (most Director books are less useful than the online documentation). This book and Lingo in a Nutshell/Director in a Nutshell are all you need.

Programmers: Don't waste your money,
By PARADEEN (FRANCE LOIRE) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Learning Lingo: The Art and Science of Programming with Macromedia(R) Director(R) (Paperback)
If you are a programmer that doesn't know Director and wants to pick up Lingo, this isn't the book for you. The author doesn't use conventional terminology to refer to scalars, arrays, control structures, etc. The index is crap too. You can't use it to look up anything an ordinary programming reference would have. The only control structure in the index is IF/ELSE !Learning Lingo is outdated (covering only Director 4), and severely lacking in content and structure. I'm sorry I shelled out... for this one.

Excellent info for those wanting to make shockwave movies,

This review is from: Learning Lingo: The Art and Science of Programming with Macromedia(R) Director(R) (Paperback)
Although this book was written for Director 4, I'm currently using 6.0 and haven't found any instances where I've had to translate anything. The great thing about this book is the way the author describes how to do just about anything with a one-frame movie. This is perfect for those interested in putting shockwave movies on the web for it greatly cuts down on the memory used. I didn't know a thing about Director, much less Lingo, when I got this book. It's an excellent manual and I'd recommend it to anyone!

Conquer your fear of Lingo programming forever!,

This review is from: Learning Lingo: The Art and Science of Programming with Macromedia(R) Director(R) (Paperback)
With friendly prose and a classromm like atmosphere, this book quickly becomes a Lingo newbie's best friend. Starting from the very basics of programming and going up into the advanced topics at your own pace, Lingo is quickly and easily learnable and all scripts and examples are adaptable to real world situations. Using this book, I created a multimedia resume (complete with games), sent it around and got a job as a multimedia specialist. It was the best money I ever spent.

After I open this book, I could easily follow up
what the author emphasizes. This book proved the
author has so much experience in teaching students
about Lingo. Hence, you can feel comfortable when
you leaf through pages all the way. I have read
"Easy Lingo". Compared to the book "Easy Lingo",
this book really teaches you with consistent and
well prepared examples. Yes, this book also explains Lingo commands dealing databases and file
I/O.

For Director 4.04! Not up to date!,
By Brandon Evans (brandone@isomedia.com) (Kirkland, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Learning Lingo: The Art and Science of Programming with Macromedia(R) Director(R) (Paperback)
I was disappointed. There was no reference to the fact that this book was for Director 4.04. The latest revision of Director is 6.0. I had to translate every statement pertaining to the changes made in Director. A lot of Lingo concepts and syntax have either been added or changed since 4.04 was the standard.
