Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

A powerful and informative collection of essays that present the concept of Earth as a living entity and the consequences of abusing it. Wallace Stegner, Wendell Berry, Barry Commoner, Edward Abbey, Anne and Paul Ehrlich, Dave Foreman, and other writers in the environmental movement present a vivid picture of polluted air and water, overpopulation, bad grazing habits, overcutting forests, toxic waste, and other manifestations of human greed and carelessness. The authors' anguish is felt as they urge readers to listen to the land and to take action through recycling, conservation of natural resources, and meaningful change to save a deteriorating planet. This book and Robert Rodale's Save Three Lives ( LJ 9/1/91) may be the two most important environmental books of the year.
- Irwin Weintraub, Rutgers Univ. Libs., Piscataway, N.J.
