THIS BOOK IS A KEEPER,

This review is from: Learning to Live with High Functioning Autism: A Parent's Guide for Professionals (Paperback)
I was surprised when I first saw the size of this book. It seemed too small to cover such an important topic but I was wrong. This book is not only outstanding in its content but beautiful in its simplicity making it easy yet important reading for anyone working with an Autistic child.Mr. Stanton's beautiful and clear description of Autism offers tremendous insight into the daily lives of these children and the need for parents to be involved in the education process if our children are to reach their full potential. He also offers an understanding of how an Autistic child sees the world. Any teacher, family member or concerned friend can not help but benefit from reading this book. I will be keeping multiple copies of this book in my home library so that I can offer them as gifts to anyone who needs a greater understanding of this condition. Thank you, Mr. Stanton. This book is a keeper.

This book is written by a parent who has been there and done that. Advocating for our children is tough, but it is even tougher when so little is known about their needs by others. When others misunderstand why our children react the way that they do it is nice to be able to turn to some resources that educate and support us in our climb. My daughters principle for next year currently has my copy of this book. He admits that educators do not have a whole lot of knowledge base for dealing with these differently wired children. It was nice to have something to hand to him, and say here read this, then you'll have a better idea what we are facing in giving this sweet child what is needed. More awareness is needed.

This book crams a tremendous amount of insight and information into a very 128 delightful pages! This is the book I recommend most highly for those who want to understand the dynamics of a child's autism. If you can read only one book about autism, this should be the one!As a father, Stanton is able to able to add a great deal of personal insight to his excellent treatment of the science and medine of autism. The book is readable, yet deals with the issues in a sophisticated and very sensitive manner. The chapter on "Myths and Insights" is especially recommended.

Must have for those dealing with HFA,

This review is from: Learning to Live with High Functioning Autism: A Parent's Guide for Professionals (Paperback)
I've never reviewed a book before, but after reading this one, I just had to. We recently received a high functioning autism diagnosis for our son and were looking for something to help us. This book was a great view into the life of a kid and family with HFA. I'm ordering several to give the the grandparents and aunts/uncles in the family so they'll have a better idea of what's going on. If you or someone you love has a HFA diagnosis, I strongly recommend starting with this book. It's an easy read and gives great insight into how someone with HFA views the world.

This review is from: Learning to Live with High Functioning Autism: A Parent's Guide for Professionals (Paperback)
I was hoping this book would provide more concrete ideas and strategies in coping with living with a child who has high functioning autism... And I mean "coping" in a good way, like what strategies might help your child. I also thought it would address how to help teachers handle situations that may arise in the classroom. But instead it is more about the author's personal experience and experiences of others that he gathered, as well as an overview to some possible high-functioning autism tendencies and perceptions someone with autism might have. It was very interesting and I liked it, but I found myself left with questions. For instance, he mentioned he wished he would have known how to respond better to his son's fears and obsessions... I waited for the answer as to what would have been a better response (I thought that would be helpful information), but the answer never came. Or, another example, he mentioned the difficulty in telling a child with high functioning autism that they are "wrong." I would have loved to get some insight on how to approach this subject, but again, the advice never came. So, my advice, if you are looking for strategic approaches on how to handle specific sticky situations, etc., this is not the book for you. If you want an interesting read about someone's journey and some general information, you'll probably like it. However, in closing I should add there was some useful advice as I did find it helpful and interesting that letting the meltdown occur and resolve on its own he thought was sometimes better than intervening; and how with some meltdowns they may want a hug, or verbal interaction, and other times not, etc. At any rate, even though I liked it, it wasn't quite what I had hoped and I think I expected too much.
