1.0 out of 5 stars Kinda Crappy
Not my favorite read. Repetitive, boring, and filled to the brim with common knowledge crap that we have all heard before. Would not recommend this book at all. Coming from a broken home is not a pre-req for falling out of love with oneself, note to author. Author didn't make me love myself, just made me dislike this book. Merely my opinion.

This book is so excellent and powerful, I don't even know where to begin. Sharon Wegscheider-Cruse is a wonderful writer who makes her points very clearly and concisely. It is very well organized and very easy to understand. This book is very quick and easy to read.

She brings greater understanding to the reader about how to develop TRUE self-esteem. Alot of different books I had read, mis-lead the reader into thinking that self-esteem is developed by externalizing our happiness... (ie. lose weight, get an education, learn a talent or language, get a new hair, buy a new dress...) All these things draw our gaze "outwards". But many people develop these outward attributes, and still feel miserable... (ie. Whitney Houston... beautiful, talented, rich, famous, but challenged with drug addiction and an unhealthy love relationship)

Sharon makes the reader realize that self-esteem is found by connecting to our inner self (or inner child). This inner child is the repository of self-worth (page 23).

There are many things explained in this book that helps the reader understand himself/herself and how to overcome our negative tendencies.

Just a wonderful book. ... By connecting to our Essence/Inner Child/Psyche through feelings, we develop TRUE SELF-WORTH.

I have been doing what these books have told me to do, and the changes in my life are incredible and quite dramatic. ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Learning to Love Yourself, May 16, 2000
This book truly transformed not only my view of myself, but helped a dear friend of mine while going through a divorce. It touches upon many issues that we all may have experienced in our childhood that impacts us today on a subliminal level. This book will aid any of us who don't love ourselves enough to allow ourselves to be the person we deserve to be. Awareness is change and the information contained within this book can ruly set you free. We will then be able to love our children more, our family, and pull in the love we so desire. Also, one can learn to forgive, that is part of letting go. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to better themselves for whatever reason. Very good book for women going through divorce and also for single Mothers.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent book, July 27, 2001

once I started reading this book it was very hard to put down it has some very good information on ways to learn to love yourself. The part that stuck in my mind the most is that it is not a situation that is making me crazy but our "reaction" to a situation that is making me crazy! The suggestions in the book are very easy to put into practice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book I've Read on This Topic, April 18, 2002

I've read so many "self-help" books, I could have been a Therapist if I'd had my head on straight! This book was recommended to me as the only one needed to get on the right track, and it definitely did. It's a gentle, easy read, and I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love - Your Most Important Possession, September 15, 2003
This review is from: Learning to Love Yourself: Finding Your Self-Worth (Paperback)
As I recently thumbed through my copy of this book, I was brought back to when I first read this, in 1996. As usual, when I am reading a book, I walk around with that book, along with something to write with, and on.

There was a stranger who came up to me and looked at me with both sadness and pity in her eyes.

She asked me, "Is this really a problem for you?"

Anyone who would ask this question, and especially to a stranger, in my opinion, probably is in denial of his or her need for greater self-expression - this is what this book is about.

Who wouldn't be looking to be a better listener; more compassionate; and fully in this moment?

We are all bombarded with social scripts; childhood expectations; and unfinished past business.

And we deserve to be more alive, more fully in the present moment, regardless of our interlocutor's beliefs.

As we grow, we search for greater peace of mind, while we experience new "opportunities."

This book is about finding peace of mind, out of healthy choices.

One of the most valuable affirmations in this book, simply stated is, "I am worth it!"

When one says this, out loud, 10 times in the morning, then 10 times in the evening; and it is said enthusiastically, you experience more breakthroughs in your life than you have even considered making.

Read this book to reaffirm your right to honor your potential and celebrate everything that you are.

For anyone seeking to understand how being raised in an abusive enviornment has affected their lives, this is the book for you. Sharon Wegscheider-Cruse helps one learn how to undo all the negative teachings that have been ingrained in childhood. Knowledge is power, and the knowledge obtained about one's feelings and how to feel good about yourself again is what this book is about.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gift for yourself, November 23, 2009
This review is from: Learning to Love Yourself: Finding Your Self-Worth (Paperback)
I have struggled with self esteem my entire life, so I have read nearly every book I can get my hands on.
This book was not only easy to read, it was easy to apply. Rebuilding self esteem is a process, not a one time fix. The informaiton was easy to understand and apply. Even though the author seems to have directed this book to adult children of alcoholics, the informaiton could apply to anyone. This book was a gift to myself and it could be a gift to give to someone you love, as well as yourself.

This has been and continues to be (2011) the best self-love book available, imho, and I have read most of them. I have an ongoing issue with self-love, getting better and better but I find I always have times I slip, and that's when I pull this book out. I have given copies to 4 different friends who were suffering with these same issues, and all have said it helped. Must have!

This is an excellent book that's both informative and motivating. It's a must have resource for learning to love yourself. Another must read of another truly profound and life changing book is The Self Love Principle by Debra Gangale.
