This is a beginner-level book, which will introduce the Nagios tool for system and network monitoring to System Administrators who are interested in monitoring their systems. Knowledge of Linux System administration is expected. The focus is on teaching system administrators to secure their systems in a much improved manner incorporating the newer features of Nagios Version 3. It will teach beginners the basics of installation and configuration of Nagios version 3; it will show professionals who have already worked on earlier versions of Nagios the new features of Nagios like inheritance and the new internal functions like better check scheduling. The main purpose of system monitoring is to detect and report any system not working properly as soon as possible, so that you are aware of problems before users run into them. Nagios constantly checks other machines on your network and various services on those machines. It is a modular and flexible solution that uses plug-ins to do its job.

Almost great,
This review is from: Learning Nagios 3.0 (Paperback)
From the technical perspective the book is well written. I would even venture to say the book is great for people just getting into Nagios monitoring, as it goes from a basic set up to on-fly configuration modifications with event handlers. I would, if only the book wasn't lacking so much in terms of editing. I'm sorry to say that, but the number of poorly phrased sentences is tremendously high, especially for a UK-based publishing company. Every now and then I had to re-read a sentence once or twice just to understand what is about, which makes it a bit hard to read but you can get used to it, and when you do you'll get a lot of valuable information from this book.
Although in my opinion this books yearns for some editing I can (with a clear conscience) recommend it to anyone deploying Nagios in his IT environment. Even if you already have a working Nagios configuration you will most probably stumble upon some good ideas here to help you make it more maintainable or simply more suited to your organization needs. I know I did.

Nagios introduction and configuration - for beginners and advanced users,
By
This review is from: Learning Nagios 3.0 (Paperback)
Book includes information for both nagios newbies and advanced administrators. Everything from installing to advanced configuration in one place. Good troubleshooting which is a big time saver. Many examples with explanations.
This book shows how to do many types of checks and gives practical examples. It also has a very good tutorial on remote host monitoring with screen dumps. Many chapters include details on how you can add your own nagios functionality. Examples on how to write your own plugins are useful and include many programming languages. They also include my favorite language, Python.
