Book Description

August 1, 2000
This handy little volume, revised and expanded in 2000, is a great support as you plan your curriculum. The pages are designed to allow you to to track introduction, pupil’s understanding, and then mastery of each concept. There is space to record progress for three students on each page. When you introduce clock skills to the hour in kindergarten, for instance, you’ll place his initial in his box. When you feel he understands the concept, you’ll circle his initialed box. When he seems to have mastered the idea, you’ll put a slash through the box, or highlight it. These may or may not all take place in a given academic year. But a quick glance can show you the progress, and what still needs to be accomplished.

If you’re unsure when to expect that your child will begin to understand coin concepts, check the math sections. Just remember that these are guides, not dictators!

Listed are objectives for Kindergarten through Grade 8 in language arts, math, history/geography, and science/health. Language arts is divided into these categories: oral language, reading, literature, library/study, thinking, composition and creative writing, capitalization/punctuation, grammar and usage, spelling, and penmanship. Math skills are divided as follows: strategy for solving story problems, number systems/operations/arithmetic, measurement/time/money, geometric concepts, statistics/graphing/probability. Fractions and algebra are added in upper levels. Map studies are a part of history/geography. All lists have been compared with recognized standards to ensure that students will not be surprised on standardized achievement tests by unfamiliar items.

The new edition also includes art, music, and character development. Art is loosely graded; music is given on pre-music, beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels; character development is in three stages and covers honesty, self-discipline, attitudes, conduct, and manners. Card stock cover, comb-bound, 8 ½ by 11 inches, 71 pages. These objectives are included in our Home Education Guide.

This book helps you keep track of what your child is doing and the pace. Most school send home progress reports every report card period--but with this book you will know EXACTLY what you child is doing & when. It's your own personal record & if your child isn't up to par on some things then those are the things that you can help them at home with. It goes from kindergarten to the eigth grade. It's fantastic if you ask me. I've learned from this exactly what every parent wants to know. We don't have to wait on the progress reports---we are now able to keep our own. Personal satisfaction!! ANOTHER DEFINITE MUST!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tremendous - Practical - Resource, December 17, 2002

-Great, reasonably priced, invaluable resource for homeschoolers. It takes the confusion out of what to teach when for people DYOC. Or, it double-checks the curriculum (packaged) you are using to make sure you keep your kids on track.
-The people at Hewitt are a great group of folks to work with, too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd had this years ago ..., December 27, 2002

This review is from: Learning Objectives for Grades K-8 (Spiral-bound)
My children are all older now, but I wish I'd had this helpful little book when I first started homeschooling over ten years ago. It'd would've saved me a lot of headaches trying to figure out what to study at each grade level, or wondering if my kids were on par with their peers or not. This isn't a fancy book by any means (comb-binding, not a lot of supporting text), but it's a helpful and worthwhile checklist of basic skills and academics that can be used to keep track of the school-related progress of three seperate children, in all the years from Kindergarten to 8th grade.
