Editorial Reviews

Product Description

The Learning Organization is a model described by Peter Senge. Metaphors such as biological DNA can be applied to describe how every part of the organization contains the Vision of the organization. Organizations are the way humans form groups to develop tasks that are beyond the ability of an individual. Even though this book discusses corporate organizational issues they are particularly applicable to nonprofit organizational structures and therefore of interest to volunteers. Organizations that are collaborative learning institutions develop solid commitments from employees, volunteers, and the community it serves.

More About the Author

I was born in Cape Town, South Africa under the system of Apartheid or legalized racial segregation and participated in the community organizing and civic campaigns that resulted in the early people's victories that culminated in the founding of the UDF and ushered in the presidency of Nelson Mandela to a New South Africa.
My expertise is in Education (Ph.D.) and Technology (20+ years of software engineering) and my passion is for Social Justice. I teach a range of courses in class and online such as Computer Programming (C++, JAVA, HTML), applications such as MSOffice, and Intercultural Studies such as Mass Movements contrasting the Civil Rights Movement and the Anti-Apartheid Struggle. My research interests include rating technology proficiency and learner empowerment (Paulo Freire's consciousness-raising).
My presentations, lectures, and writing draw from my international perspective, my oppressed roots, and my desire to preserve indigenous learning especially in language, music, and art.
My technology writings address technology in regard to exponential learning since technology advances at an exponential rate according to Moore's law. My social justice writing address racism and social justice from the perspective of scientific problem-solving using third world and indigenous concepts where western science and philosophy have not yet produced adequate answers.
When I applied for a job in computer programming I was told that it was a "white" domain so a 300 baud modem became my freedom road to program and produce solutions sight unseen. Working online for so long provided me an edge when the internet arrived and allowed for telecommuting.
Learning to solve early computing problems helped develop community organizing strategies that were robust and predictable. I learned to appreciate how computing science can be harnessed to solve community problems. My mediation and reconciliation ability informs me how computing can serve community and how community can embrace technology to produce positive outcomes.

A learning organization can come about in two ways. A learning organization can be birthed with learning intentions. The founders can create it with a vision of learning when they create an organization.
