One of the most important books ever on teaching reading, April 11, 2006
This review is from: Learning to Read and Spell: The Child's Knowledge of Words (Hardcover)
It is inevitable that in fields which put a high value on up-to-dateness and "staying on the cutting edge" that there are important books that are overlooked and under-read. In the field of reading education, Ed Henderson's Learning to Read and Spell is one of these books. A master clinician with a first-rate analytical mind and a heart to match, Henderson produced a small book--shot full of wisdom and insight--that should be required reading for reading educators at all levels. Unfortunately, the book rests in anonymity, as undoubtedly do many idiosyncratic gems in various academic fields. My hope is that in future generations, this book will be rediscovered and its message attended to. I do know this, the content of this book is of timeless importance.
